Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC) is seeking a dynamic, detail-oriented, and results-driven individual to join our Neuropathology team. The successful candidate will support brain tissue research by maintaining the Brain Bank inventory, managing compliance documentation, and assisting with wet bench activities. The role also involves administrative support such as scheduling, data management, and customer service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain and update the Brain Bank inventory, including brain specimens, blocks, slides, and stains.
  • Process and manage compliance paperwork for tissue requests (IRB, HTOC, and other regulatory requirements).
  • Assist in histology and wet bench activities, including solution preparation, ordering supplies, maintaining chemical inventories, and following lab safety protocols.
  • Conduct brain tissue staining procedures and ensure quality control of laboratory techniques.
  • Teach and train graduate students, post-docs, and clinical fellows in laboratory procedures and documentation when needed
  • Manage digital storage systems and ensure accurate documentation of research materials.
  • Schedule meetings, manage calendars, and provide administrative support to research faculty.
  • Communicate effectively via email, phone, and in-person interactions with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with UNM, State, and federal regulations regarding human tissue research.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

TERM APPOINTMENT; FUNDING AVAILABLE THROUGH 07/31/2025; CONTINUANCE BEYOND THAT DATE SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY OF ADDITIONAL FUNDING.

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.


Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences or a related field
  • 5 years of experience in biomedical research
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) on both Mac and Windows platforms
  • Familiarity with digital storage systems and data management
  • Experience in histology techniques, tissue handling, and staining
  • Willingness to work with post-mortem human tissues
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and follow detailed instructions
