POSITION DETAILS

Position Summary

A grinding Manufacturing Engineer works in the manufacturing process to ensure products meet quality, finish, and precision standards. They are experts at the grinding machining process, which removes material from a workpiece to achieve extremely tight tolerances. This role involves determining manufacturing procedures and operation sequencing, establishing tooling, gauging, and machine requirements to machine parts for various products and product lines.

This position will serve as the liaison between Manufacturing Engineering and other functional groups including manufacturing, design engineering, quality, and customer service. Responsible for creating the methods and sequence of manufacturing operations for intricate and/or complex machined parts and assemblies that meet design and quality requirements. Provide manufacturability input and manufacturing plans for product design or modification. Work on continuous improvement projects that support the Lean Manufacturing methodology such as set-up reduction and Kaizen events.

Principal Activities



  • Develop and prepare complete processes and routes for machined parts to meet/exceed the organizational goals of customer satisfaction, scrap, and manufacturing time per piece


  • Determine, design and implement fixtures, and gages for machining new products


  • Spend time on the production floor solving problems and improving processes associated with the parts he/she is responsible for.


  • Determines root cause of failures using statistical methods (e.g. design of experiment, statistical process control) that may result in changes in design, tolerances, or processing methods


  • Prepare rework operation sheets for salvage of discrepant parts and follow through with corrective action to reduce the possibility of reoccurrence of discrepant parts


  • Work on continuous improvement projects, set-up reduction, TPM, 5S that support the Lean Manufacturing methodology


  • Evaluate product designs for manufacturability


  • Participate in the evaluation, procurement and start-up of new capital equipment


  • Establish standard times for setup and run of each operation on assigned parts


  • Developing and manage multiple project plans and schedules for work activities within timing and cost constraints


  • Follow up jobs during the initial stage of manufacturing to ensure processing and effect revisions to tooling and processing as necessary.


  • An understanding of drafting standards and geometric dimension and tolerance and ability to utilize reading part drawings


  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing publications, establishing industry networks, bench-marking state-of-the-art practices, and/or participating in professional associations


  • Provide leadership to others in department and other departments. Act as prime contact on all grinding challenges within the plant. Establish goals and objectives required to complete projects. Trains and mentors less experienced employees



Job Requirements:

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge Skills & Abilities



  • Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, and materials.


  • Proficient in technical problem-solving and troubleshooting of machining operations.


  • Experience in using precision measurement instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMM).


  • Solid knowledge of manufacturing quality control processes and standards.


  • Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, AutoCAD or similar design software experience is required. 3D modeling experience is a plus.


  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as part drawings, assembly drawings, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or associates of organization.


Education & Experience



  • Bachelor's degree or an Associate's degree and minimum of 6 years relevant professional experience or a High School diploma and minimum of 8 years relevant professional experience.


  • 3+ years' grinding experience.


  • Experience in close tolerance work; working in .0005" or less


  • Excellent communication and documentation skills to work effectively with a variety of people and teams.
