About the Job:

The Category Manager - Fuel is responsible for developing and refining enterprise-wide sourcing strategies for fuel-related requirements. The manager is responsible for developing the best overall value for the company's fuel needs. This role involves day-to-day ownership of the strategic management of the company's fuel-related initiatives. Manages and oversees all fuel-related purchases, which includes proactively identifying areas of opportunity, process improvement, and cost efficiencies. Develops policies, procedures, and objectives for the operation of the procurement program in accordance with organization objectives. Assures new developments relative to fuel procurement are investigated and makes recommendations that meet the organization's objectives. Works closely with Operations personnel to align on needs, strategic approaches, and impactful decisions. Coordinates with division resources to manage large fuel-related installations. Develops relationships with stakeholders nationwide. Effectively communicates with all employees, including senior leadership. Quickly responds to unique situations and solves problems on the fly.

What You'll Do:



  • Lead team efforts, including development, coordination, and continuous evaluation of suppliers and procurement commitments.
  • Understands and monitors fuel markets, trends, and forecasts.
  • Leverages extensive category and supplier knowledge to drive lower TCO.
  • Assures vendor compliance with agreements and manage supplier performance in accordance with VMC standards.
  • Facilitates analysis/discussion around hedging opportunities with key internal stakeholders.
  • Explores and leads opportunities for alternative sources of fuel.

Qualifications

Skills You'll Need:

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in the field required, advanced degree desirable.

Experience: Successful, 3+ year track record in fuel or related markets. 2+ years of focused management of fuel categories/programs for organizations with 1,000+ vehicle fleets or 100+ locations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Extensive knowledge of fuel categories (e.g., bulk & retail fuels, alternative fuels (CNG & LNG).
  • Strong market fundamentals and understanding of fuel cost drivers including supply and demand fundamentals.
  • Strong project management skills and experience are necessary.
  • Analytical and decision skills; including the abilities to mine information and make decisions with limited information.
  • Ability to earn respect of key internal stakeholders. Demonstrates a collaborative working style with the ability to develop. relationships with internal customers while also driving continuous improvement with operating partners.
  • Negotiating skills; including the ability to communicate with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels of a company.
  • Clearly communicates a vision for the future state and sets stretch goals for self and team.
  • Strong communicator; understands and clearly communicates a larger sense of purpose and mission. Can effectively communicate both written and verbally.
