Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's growing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) team is looking for an Associate Technical Editor to join us in our Washington, DC office. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic team and across diverse disciplines, giving you exposure to a wide variety of projects in size and scope across the country. Our NEPA team is currently engaged in energy, transportation, and Federal lands projects nationwide and the Washington, DC office is involved in a number of the region's most exciting projects.

VHB's passionate professionals include engineers, scientists, planners, and designers who partner with public and private clients in the transportation, real estate, institutional, and energy industries, as well as federal, state, and local governments.

Together, we work to improve mobility, enhance communities and economic vitality, and balance development and infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship. In this role, you would participate in a Washington, DC-based team on NEPA reviews nationwide. VHB supports NEPA reviews for a range of agencies including the Surface Transportation Board, National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maritime Administration, Federal Transit Administration, and Federal Highway Administration. The Washington, DC office also collaborates with some of the country's top law firms in NEPA-related litigation. VHB is involved in some of the most transformative transportation and urban development projects in the Washington, DC region. This is an excellent opportunity to support VHB's document development program. This hire will support high-visibility client project deliverables and provide direct client support through technical editing on project deliverables.

Responsibilities

    Provides technical editing on deliverables to ensure accuracy, clarity, grammar, style, and format, ensuring they are suitable for their intended audience and purpose.
  • Supports the production of high-quality client deliverables.
  • Collaborates with managers and technical staff to shape the organization of documents and develop annotated outlines that include page targets.
  • Interviews technical team members and edits their narrative to make it readable for the decisionmaker and the public.
  • Ensures style guidelines and standards for texts and illustrations are incorporated in production of deliverables.
  • Supports delivery through collaborative production and document assembly.
  • Participates in the production of multiple, simultaneous client deliverable efforts on varying timelines.
  • Advises management and/or leaders on resource constraints and prioritization of efforts.
  • Provides all editing services on time and within the project and client's budget.

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Exceptional editing skills with ability to quickly and accurately edit and reformat documents under time constraints.
  • Ability to identify and seek needed information/research skills.
  • Ability to adapt to and communicate changes with ease.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Team oriented with ability to perform multiple tasks independently in a timely manner and collaborate effectively and positively with coworkers.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented.
  • Skills and knowledge must be commensurate with required experience and job level.

Qualifications

  • 0-1 years of relevant environmental planning experience
  • Bachelor's degree in an environmental discipline, public policy, technical writing, or a related field required

Hiring Salary Range - $32.00/hr - $36.00/hr. However, the final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, and experience. In addition, VHB offers a holistic benefits package which can be found here.
