Position Summary |
Winston-Salem State University (
WSSU) is seeking a dynamic and dedicated professional for the position of
Residence Education Coordinator (
REC) within the Department of Housing and Residence Life. The
REC will play a key role in enhancing the residential experience for students, providing leadership, guidance, and support to foster a positive and engaging campus environment
The
REC will be responsible for overseeing the operations of assigned residence halls or living-learning communities, supervising and supporting Resident Advisors (RAs), and developing and implementing educational and community-building programs that support students' academic, personal, and social growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Residential Community Development:
- Develop, implement, and evaluate residential education programs that enhance student engagement, leadership, and personal development.
- Foster a supportive and inclusive residential community where students feel connected to the university and their peers.
- Collaborate with students to plan events and programs that meet the needs and interests of the residential community.
Supervision and Training of Resident Advisors (RAs):
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of Resident Advisors in assigned residential areas.
- Provide mentorship, coaching, and regular feedback to RAs to ensure they are effectively carrying out their responsibilities.
- Organize and lead regular staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities for RAs.
Student Support and Crisis Management:
- Serve as a key resource for students in crisis, providing support for issues such as mental health concerns, roommate conflicts, academic challenges, and personal emergencies.
- Respond to emergencies and conduct follow-up to ensure the safety and well-being of students in residence.
- Provide referrals to campus resources such as counseling services, academic advising, and student health services as needed.
Residential Operations and Administration:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of assigned residence halls, including maintaining order, ensuring facilities are well-maintained, and enforcing university policies and procedures.
- Assist with room assignments, student check-ins/check-outs, and responding to student inquiries or concerns regarding housing.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation related to incidents, program participation, and student interactions.
Collaboration with Campus Partners:
- Partner with academic affairs, student services, and other campus departments to ensure an integrated approach to student development and success.
- Support the implementation of university-wide initiatives and collaborate on programs that enhance student life and learning.
Assessment and Evaluation:
- Collect feedback from students, RAs, and other stakeholders to assess the effectiveness of residential programs and services.
- Analyze program data and feedback to make data-driven recommendations for continuous improvement.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education |
Education: Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field (or the ability to complete a Master's degree within 2 years of employment). Experience: Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in residence life, student affairs, or a related field, including experience in student support, programming, and supervision. Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
- Knowledge of student development theory, conflict resolution strategies, and best practices in residence life.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities, maintaining attention to detail while working in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with crisis management and the ability to respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations.
- Proficiency in using technology for communication, documentation, and program assessment.
- Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the residence halls and across campus.
