Director of Marketing and Communications Experience Camps is a national nonprofit that transforms the lives of grieving children through no-cost summer camps, year-round programs, and a culture-shifting movement to normalize childhood grief. THE OPPORTUNITY Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Marketing & Communications is a senior leader who shapes and drives the brand, marketing, and communications strategy at Experience Camps. This role is responsible for elevating awareness, deepening engagement, and advancing the organization’s mission through powerful storytelling and strategic visibility. While not executing every task directly, the Director leads the development of a scalable team architecture - including staff, partners, and systems to deliver on key goals. They are accountable for high-level strategy, team leadership, and cross-functional alignment, ensuring that marketing and communications efforts support camper recruitment, donor engagement, thought leadership, and brand growth. This position is ideal for someone who blends creative vision with strong leadership, thrives in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, and believes in the power of storytelling to change hearts and minds.
RESPONSIBILITIES The following is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Other responsibilities and duties may be assigned: BRAND & MARKETING STRATEGY Develop and lead overarching marketing and communications strategy. Ensure consistent, compelling brand identity across all channels, campaigns, merchandise, and graphic content. Align marketing efforts with organizational priorities in camper/family outreach, volunteer recruitment, fundraising, and program awareness. Manage relationships with creative and digital agencies to execute strategic marketing campaigns.
CONTENT, SOCIAL MEDIA, & STORYTELLING Oversee content strategy and production, ensuring powerful storytelling and thought leadership across digital, video, print, and social platforms. Oversee the planning and execution of content capture at camp, including hiring, training, and media release processes. Manage the marketing team and guide platform-specific content strategy and community engagement. Spearhead campaign efforts for key moments such as Children’s Grief Awareness Day and Mental Health Awareness Month, leading creative direction across all media.
COMMUNICATIONS & THOUGHT LEADERSHIP Lead and execute strategic communications plans that elevate Experience Camps’ mission, impact, and thought leadership across diverse platforms and audiences. Develop and manage a thought leadership strategy that positions Experience Camps as a leader in the field of childhood grief. Oversee the development of compelling content and messaging for donor engagement, program outreach, media relations, and public campaigns. Serve as the organization’s primary media contact and manage external communications partners. Develop and oversee PR strategy and implementation, including media materials, branded visuals, and generate media coverage and publicity.
TEAM LEADERSHIP & COLLABORATION Manage and mentor the marketing team, including communications, design, and social media functions; foster a creative, inclusive, mission-aligned, and high-performing culture. Provide strategic leadership and creative direction to internal team members and contractors. Manage the marketing budget and external agencies, ensuring efficiency and creative excellence. Collaborate across departments to support programmatic, development, and operational initiatives with high-quality marketing and design support.
EXPECTATIONS COMPENSATION, AND BENEFITS 40 hours/week with flexible hours to account for occasional calls and meetings in the evenings. Ability to be productive in a remote work environment. Occasional travel during the year for events and meetings (approx. 6-8), Primarily to NYC. Ability for on-site travel during the weeks of camp programs. Willingness to be a team player and transition seamlessly between areas of Marketing and Communications. Annual base salary range: $100,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience. QUALIFICATIONS 10+ years of experience in marketing, communications, or related fields. Demonstrated success in brand strategy, digital marketing, campaign development, and content leadership. Excellent writer, editor, and storyteller with a sharp visual sensibility. Experience managing staff and external vendors in a remote working environment. Passion for Experience Camps’ mission and values. Strong organizational and project management skills.
