Job Summary

The Department of Animal Science has facilities that serve several other campus departments as well as the School of Veterinary Medicine. The cattle and feed milling facilities are highly complex and must operate as commercial units with the additional demands and requirements of teaching and research facilities. The Beef Operation has an income of over $500,000 per year. These facilities operate with 3 FTE, 4 student facility residents, student laborers and interns. The feed mill is a highly complex production unit, supplying both herd and experimental rations for the Department of Animal Science, as well as other campus units as requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Experience with moving cattle into transportation vehicles (trucks, trailers- both gooseneck and bumper pull), drive the vehicle to the point of delivery, unload and coordinate animal movement.
  • Experience with nutritional requirements and feeding systems for beef cattle.
  • Eperience with feed mill operations.
  • Skills to use a personal computer including database, spreadsheet, and word-processing software.Knowledge of reproductive cycles and A.I. (artificial insemination), natural service, estrus detection, and estrus synchronization in beef cattle.
  • Knowledge of general husbandry procedures, and diseases associated with beef cattle, health and vaccination programs, and guidelines for production of quality meat and feed
  • Knowledge of bio-security guidelines and techniques and the skills to enforce a workable plan to maintain healthy cattle in a teaching, research, and outreach environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of animal use and care guidelines for the use of animals in research and teaching.
  • Skills to provide research support- feeding, data collection, collection of biological samples, etc. for individuals conducting research with beef cattle.
  • Knowledge of range/forage evaluation, pasture management, range cattle resource management.
  • Skills to talk with groups not associated with the university about beef cattle research and the basics of beef herd management.
  • Skills to use industry specific software programs for milling operations and beef cattle operations.
  • Skills to lecture in undergraduate courses on the basics of applied beef management.
  • Skills to follow university teaching and research protocols and assist graduate students with the same.

Department Overview

The Department of Animal Science, originally the Division of Animal Husbandry, originated in Berkeley in 1901. The division moved to Davis in 1908 and 1909 and later became the Department of Animal Husbandry. The department's name changed to Animal Science in 1967, recognizing its emphasis on the basic biology of domestic animals as well as animal husbandry in its teaching and research programs. In 1998, faculty, staff and students from the Department of Avian Sciences transferred to the Department of Animal Science, adding avian species to the department's missions.

Department Specific Job Scope

This is a highly responsible position managing the UCD experimental beef feedlot (750 head capacity), registered beef cattle unit (100 cows at 3 locations), commercial cattle operation (450 cows at SFREC), and feed milling facility (2000 tons annual feed production) operated by the Department of Animal Science.
