About the Job

The Center for Translational Medicine (CTM) temporary Researcher 1 position is part of our laboratory team supporting preclinical animal studies. Our Center is committed to respect, inclusivity, continuous improvement, and teamwork. This position will work in compliance with University policies and procedures for research safety, animal welfare, and research occupational health. The mission of the Center for Translational Medicine is to provide a comprehensive portfolio of services to develop and implement novel, investigator-initiated treatment strategies for breakthroughs in medicine at the University of Minnesota. We provide infrastructure, expertise, and resources to translate innovative drugs and biological reagents into Phase 1 clinical trials of new therapies for patient treatment.

Job Responsibilities

Research Animal Health Monitoring and Treatment Administration (75%)

  • Health monitoring must be performed at the frequency specified in the approved animal welfare protocol for each study. This responsibility is frequently required to be performed on weekend days and University holidays.
  • Recognize clinical signs of adverse health conditions in multiple species. Must be able to communicate with veterinary staff using appropriate terminology to describe observed adverse conditions, to respond with appropriate treatment to common or anticipated conditions, and to understand and implement clinical veterinary instructions.
  • Dosing and treatment administration performed according to study protocol specifications. Must be able to give drug treatments by several routes of administration such as oral, intravenous, subcutaneous, or intraperitoneal in multiple species.
  • Calculate dose concentration and volume to administer and perform quality control checks on calculations.
  • Document study procedures at time of performance; records must be complete, accurate, and legible.
  • Maintain laboratory training record for applicable laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); assist with periodic review of existing SOPs and writing new procedures.

Data Entry and Quality Control (20%)

  • Enter animal health data into study spreadsheets for body weight, body condition, dosing and treatment administration, and clinical observations.
  • Perform Quality Control check on data entered in study spreadsheets by other lab personnel.

Service Delivery and Professional Development (5%)

  • Remain current and participate in continuing education and training opportunities related to animal welfare, species requirements, and procedure refinements.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and investigator/project meetings as requested.
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented in application materials.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years; applies knowledge and skill to a recurring task or activity with emphasis on precision and timeliness of execution.
  • Must be willing, able, and qualified to work with laboratory research animals on a protocol approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree related to biology, chemistry, or health sciences.
  • Experience working with animals in a laboratory research environment; familiarity with University of Minnesota Research Animal Resources (RAR) and IACUC policies and procedures.
  • Basic scientific computer skills including spreadsheet data entry and analysis using Microsoft Excel and proficiency with documents in Microsoft Word.
  • Knowledge and skill to use laboratory equipment and tools independently, expertly, and safely, including single channel and multichannel pipets, balances, fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, surgical tools, dosing supplies, downdraft table, and vaporizer (anesthesia machine).
About the Department

The Center for Translational Medicine (CTM) in the Office of Academic and Clinical Affairs provides a spectrum of research, testing, and advisory services to inventors of novel medicines, therapies and devices from early stage proof of concept models through the final stages of preclinical testing and into early clinical trials.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $28/hr; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
