JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State University Park Airport is searching for a full time Airframe and Powerplant Technician with Inspection Authorizationto join their team. Duties include:

  • Analyze and diagnose malfunctions and/or defects in airframe structures systems and components and in powerplants and associated systems and components
  • Determine the extent of the repairs required and procedures necessary to correct problems
  • Report recurring malfunctions to Lead A & P Technician with the Inspection Authorization
  • Inspect, service, test, repair, maintain, overhaul and modify airframe structures, both metal and fabric covered, including: wood structures; fabric and fiberglass covering materials, finishing materials, sheetmetal structures; bonded structures, plastics, honeycomb, and laminated structures; windows, doors, and interior finishings
  • Inspect, check, service, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, modify, remove, install, test, and maintain powerplants including reciprocating engine and turbine engine systems and components including engine instrument systems, engine fire protection systems, engine electrical system, lubricating, ignition, fuel metering and induction systems, engine cooling systems, engine exhaust systems, propellers and propeller synchronizing and ice control systems and control system components, fixed pitch, constant speed, and feathering propellers and propeller governing systems
  • Assist Lead Airframe or A & P Technician with I.A. in the preparation of work schedules by advising on workloads and capabilities; and with training, answering questions for and directing the work of A & P Mechanics as required
  • Assist Lead A & P Technician with I.A. to provide customers with an explanation of maintenance requirements, estimated cost of work and completion time, and in following up to inform the customers of progress and/or any deviation from original cost estimates
  • Participate in flight check of aircraft as required to determine malfunctions in airframe, powerplant, and other aircraft components and systems, and necessary maintenance and/or repair; or to test adequacy of maintenance and/or repair that has been performed
  • Assist with special and/or FAA required annual and/or progressive inspections and conduct maintenance of University owned and/or outside customer's aircraft, aircraft components and systems, and related equipment
  • Maintain aircraft log books in accordance with FAA regulations, sign for own work as mechanic and review maintenance forms, aircraft records, and report to ensure complete documentation in accordance with directives
  • Rig rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft, and balance and rig movable surfaces
  • Perform airframe conformity and airworthiness inspections
  • Replace worn or damaged skin, hinges, cables, etc.
  • Accomplish major structural modification; troubleshoot complex structural repair situations and perform necessary repair operations including those of plastic, sheetmetal, and extended aircraft structural components
  • Modify aircraft components and accomplish original installation of aircraft systems in accordance with applicable technical publications
  • Adjust, align and calibrate aircraft systems to ensure maximum operating efficiency is consistent with design characteristics
  • Assist in weight-and-balance functions in accordance with published procedures and directives
  • Read and interpret electrical circuit diagrams, aircraft drawings, symbols and schematic diagrams, blueprints, graphs and charts
  • Select and use FAA and Manufacturer's aircraft maintenance specifications data sheets, and manuals and publications and related Federal Aviation Regulations
  • Maintain knowledge of and proficiency in the inspection, repair, maintenance, servicing, and modification of aircraft and related aerospace equipment according to current Federal Aviation Regulations, Manufacturer's Specifications and University Standards
  • Attend clinics and/or schools as required to keep abreast of any technological advancement
  • Assist in ensuring that safe working conditions prevail at all times on the job; report unusual conditions to Lead A & P Technician with I.A. Assist in maintaining inventory records for stock control parts and supplies; assist in physical inventory of parts and supplies as directed
  • Perform line service to aircraft as required
  • Tow, taxi and moor aircraft
  • Inspect, check, service, troubleshoot, repair, modify, install, and maintain airframe systems and components including: aircraft landing gear systems; hydraulic and pneumatic power systems; cabin atmosphere control systems; aircraft instrument systems; communication and navigation systems; electrical systems; fuel systems, etc.
  • Participate in maintenance functional check flights as required to troubleshoot malfunctions in airframe, powerplant, and other aircraft components and systems in order to determine necessary maintenance and for repair, to test for adequacy of maintenance and/or repairs that has been performed or to make in-flight adjustments to installed equipment
  • Weigh aircraft; perform measurements and calculations for weight-and-balance check and record data in accordance with published procedures and directives
  • Operate, inspect and check serviceability and operation of and perform maintenance on air conditioning, hydraulic and pressurization service equipment, auxiliary power units and other aerospace and airport ground equipment and vehicles
  • Assist the Repair Station Chief Inspector with employment interviews to determine the technical capabilities and qualifications of prospective A & P technicians and mechanics
  • Perform line service to aircraft as required
  • Tow, taxi, park, and moor aircraft
  • Attend clinics and/or schools as required to keep abreast of any technological advancement and to meet local aircarrier maintenance support agreement requirements
  • Assist in assuring that safe working conditions prevail at all times on the job; report unusual problems to Chief Inspector
  • Instruct technicians and mechanics in general safety procedures and precautions

Job Requirements: Requires the use of advanced shop mathematics, together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas, all varieties of adjustable measuring instruments and the use of broad training in a recognized trade or craft. Equivalent to a complete accredited, indentured apprenticeship or equivalent to high school plus completion of formal apprenticeship program or equivalent to qualify as Airframe and Powerplant Technician. Requires Federal Aviation Administration Inspection Authorization Certification within 6 months of hire. Over 3 years up to and including 5 years of effective experience. Active aircraft mechanic for the last 2 current years.

NOTE: POSITION REQUIRES UNESCORTED ACCESS AUTHORITY PRIVILEGES TO THE AIR OPERATIONS AREA AND THE SECURED AREA/SECURITY IDENTIFICATION DISPLAY AREA. APPLICANT IS REQUIRED TO UNDERGO A SECURITY THREAT ASSESSMENT (STA) AND A CHECK (CHRC) THAT DISCLOSES WHETHER THE APPLICANT HAS A DISQUALIFYING OFFENSE. NOTE: THIS POSITION REQUIRES THAT YOU OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE AS A PART OF YOUR JOB DUTIES. A VALID DRIVER`S LICENSE AND SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE RECORDS CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED IN ADDITION TO STANDARD BACKGROUND CHECKS.

This position is part of the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union No. 8 and has a starting hourly wage of $31.62.
