Hours per week: 12-20

Employment Period: Academic Year

Pay Rate: 16.49 - 16.49

Position Description:

The primary role of a Learning Communities (LC) Peer Mentor is to be a positive role model for first time first year students. The goal of Learning Communities is to assist new undergraduate first-time students with adapting to university life as well as with their academic success. Each semester, mentors are obligated to attend up to two linked first year courses during the Fall and Spring semesters in addition to conducting study sessions and other social events throughout the semester.

Expectations of PMs:
*Student Interaction and Community Development
oRegularly communicate with assigned section(s) of First Year Seminar (FYS) and announce activities, events, gatherings and programming held by the Learning Communities, Colleges, Academic Departments, Student Life and Student Senate, etc.
oSchedule and lead at least programs/events each semester in conjunction with your committee team of PMs.
oDemonstrate a comprehensive understanding of your cohort department, major and NJIT to be able to explain academic opportunities and resources as relevant to students' major.
oAcquaint new students with campus services, activities, events and facilities, encouraging the development of NJIT pride.
oParticipate in and assist with NSO 2.0, College 101 & 201, Convocation/Graduation, Open Houses, and Experience Days throughout Fall and Spring terms.
*First Year Seminar (FYS)
oRegularly attend your assigned FYS and communicate with the instructor and any other student staff attached to your cohort (i.e., Another Peer Mentor, an OAA Peer Advisor Liaison, etc.).
oWhile you are not a Tutor or TA, you are expected to collaborate and assist with ice breakers, team builders, class flow, presenting on various FYS topics, etc.
oServe as a liaison between the students and the instructor to voice any individual or common concerns, challenges, issues or requests
oImmediately let the instructor of the FYS and the LC Pro Staff know if there is a student at-risk or of concern.
oIf you are attached to a Linked-Course (i.e., FED101 and FYS), you must also regularly communicate with that linked-course instructor to determine how frequently you need to attend the class.

2.5 Cumulative GPA or higher
Full-time, matriculated NJIT students for the duration of the contract
Active community members
In good disciplinary standing
Excellent communication, organization and time management skills
Ability to work well with both students, parents, faculty and administrators
Demonstrate an interest in helping others
