About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Staff Fire Protection Engineer to join our team at Rivian, where you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and compliance of our electric vehicle manufacturing operations. In this role, you will design, implement, and maintain fire protection systems to safeguard our facilities, electric vehicles, and personnel. Your contributions will be crucial in advancing our cutting-edge manufacturing processes while ensuring that safety is prioritized throughout all phases of production.

As a Staff Fire Protection Engineer, you will also take on key responsibilities related to hazardous chemical storage and use, collaborate closely with local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), and be a thought leader in driving flexibility and innovation in our production facilities. You will work across functions, aligning fire protection solutions with Rivian's mission and values, and constantly push the envelope to ensure the highest levels of safety and performance.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with manufacturing engineering, facilities, risk, policy, maintenance, EHS and safety teams to integrate fire protection systems into new and existing facilities.
  • Code Compliance and Safety Standards: Stay up-to-date with national, local, and industry-specific fire safety codes, standards, and best practice guidelines. Ensure that all fire protection systems meet or exceed compliance standards, including NFPA, local fire codes, FM approvals, and/and UL certifications.
  • Leading Relationships with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ): Develop and maintain positive relationships with local AHJs, ensuring that all fire protection designs and systems meet local building codes and regulatory requirements. Work proactively to address any concerns or requests from AHJs and ensure timely approvals for design plans and system implementations.
  • Risk Assessment and Hazard Analysis: Ensure fire risk assessments and hazard analysis for manufacturing processes, facilities, and products are scoped and completed as needed. Identify potential fire hazards and provide recommendations for mitigation strategies and design improvements.
  • Fire Protection System Testing and Maintenance: Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of fire protection systems, ensuring that they function correctly. Support the operations and safety teams in developing maintenance schedules and ensure systems are regularly inspected, maintained, and upgraded as necessary.
  • Incident Investigation: Support operations and safety teams leading investigations into any fire-related incidents within manufacturing facilities, identifying root causes, and developing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
