General Notes

Dr. Kristin Nielsen at UTMSI (Port Aransas, TX) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in Aquatic Toxicology. The Nielsen lab's overarching research goal is to establish links between toxicant exposure and adverse effects on the health of aquatic biota, including potential downstream population and community-level effects. The successful candidate will conduct characterization and toxicity studies for extramurally funded projects, focusing on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Candidates should also be interested in establishing interdisciplinary collaborative relationships that have the potential to meaningfully advance the current state of the science as it relates to their topic of interest. Initial appointment duration is 2 years, renewable for up to 3 years based on performance and funding. Stipend and benefits will be determined by UT salary guidelines. The start date for this position will be June 1 2025

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research.
  • Assist in establishing protocols and facilities in and relating to the laboratory.
  • Provide guidance and assistance on related projects to other lab members

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in aquatic toxicology or marine biology (completed within the last 2 years)
  • A demonstrated ability to plan, execute, communicate, and publish independent research
  • Proficiency in biostatistical analyse
  • Experience culturing and conducting developmental toxicity studies using saltwater fish models exposed to PFAS
  • Familiarity with Gulf coast ecosystems
  • Commitment to fostering and maintaining a positive and synergistic culture within the Nielsen lab and broader UTMSI community, including a willingness to mentor junior researchers and engage in collaborative research projects

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience analyzing omics datasets
  • Experience conducting field studies in estuarine/marine environments
  • Experience with analytical and imaging instrumentation (e.g., mass specs, confocal)

Salary Range

$60,000 annually

Working Conditions.

The selected applicant will conduct research in the Nielsen Lab at UT-MSI in Port Aransas, TX. Please note that UT-MSI is a University of Texas at Austin satellite research campus located 3.5 hours from Austin. Collaboration with other researchers within the College of Natural Science is always encouraged; however, access to resources on main campus will require travel

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
