Mott MacDonald is seeking a Principal Lead P&C engineer to join the team in the Boston, MA, New York, NY, or Iselin, NJ offices. In this role, you will lead the North Division, managing and growing a team of P&C engineers and SCADA specialists. This position is ideal for a very senior candidate who is eager to take on the challenge of overseeing a full team and driving excellence in engineering projects. This is a position with a lot of hands-on engineering utilizing a broad knowledge of electrical utility experience, engineering principles, and practices acquired through progressive experience and education. Requires background in protection & controls for switching stations and substations to develop and implement designs for existing and new transmission and distribution projects. Knowledge of Short circuit Studies, Relay Settings Calculations, and Database files will definitely be a plus.

Your duties will include:




  • Able to provide P&C design for electrical utility projects for distribution and transmission voltages for Switching stations and Substations from 4kV up to and including 500kV.
  • Lead and mentor a team of P&C / SCADA engineers and specialists, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Develop and implement strategies to grow the North Division, ensuring the team is equipped to handle increasing project demands.
  • Drive performance and accountability within the team, setting clear goals and expectations.
  • Proficient in working independently on the following P&C drawings: P & C one lines, three lines drawings, Ac/DC Distribution diagrams, relay protection and control schematics, instrumentation and alarm schematics, SCADA controls, racks and panels layouts, wiring diagrams, control house layouts, cable schedules and bill of materials.
  • Coordinate design with electrical layout designers and engineers, system protection, construction supervisors, commissioning engineers, and field personnel.
  • Experienced in calculating AC and DC load bank sizes and battery banks etc.
  • Provide guidance and Quality reviews of P&C design done by other junior designers or contractors.
  • Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers and review technical documentation related to P&C design.
  • Lead a team of designers for complex projects and actively participate in technical discussions with clients as needed by the projects.
  • Proved working experience with engineering and design of microprocessor relays for transmission and distribution lines, busses, transformers, PARs, reactors, capacitors for switching stations and substations 4kV-500kV. Deep knowledge in controls of high voltage breakers, GIS, high voltage equipment monitoring and SCADA.
  • Participate in and/or lead the effort for estimating/ scheduling P & C work on relevant engineering bids/proposals.



We invite applications from candidates with the following experience:




  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering required. Master's degree in electrical engineering is a plus.
  • 15+ years of experience as an electrical engineer working in protection and control and/or SCADA.
  • Must have at least 5 years of prior work experience, project background experience, in each of the following:
  • Electrical utility switching stations/substations experience and knowledge of electrical stations equipment, e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, medium voltage switchgear, gas insulated stations (GIS), regulators, capacitor banks, fiber optic communication, oil pumping plants, and their protection & controls.
  • Proficient knowledge and experience with protective relay schemes and applications, fiber optic communication, SCADA, metering, A.C & D.C power distribution and controls, alarms, fiber optic communication and equipment monitoring systems.
  • Proficient in working on complex one line controls, schematics for protective relays including microprocessor relays, control schematics, alarms, auxiliary power, SCADA and metering circuits, etc. and understanding of electrical layout drawings in order to effectively support projects.
  • Knowledge of NERC and IEEE Standards.
  • Train and Mentor junior staff in technical matters related to Design.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • PE-Professional Engineer registration is preferred.

The expected salary for this position is

Massachusetts: $147,000 - $180,000

New York: $149,000 - $182,000

New Jersey: $140,000 - $172,000

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
