Field Services Representative II's make service calls on customers to perform a variety of service, investigation, and collection duties; including turning water on and off; investigating blocked meters, interconnections, high bill or leak complaints, and obtaining and providing a variety of customer service information. Incumbents receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and must be fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Typical duties may include:
*Visiting customer premises to locate, read and turn the meter on or off as required.
*Securing names, addresses and other information to complete water service forms.
*Inspecting meters, connections, plumbing fixtures and lines for leaks or damage.
*Investigating reports of unauthorized water consumption, interconnections and possible backflow to auxiliary water supplies.
*Determining reasons for low or no water complaints.
*Obtaining information required to determine the type of business or residence served and to ensure proper sewer code classification.
*Answering a variety of water service questions, often from irate or difficult customers.
*Determining if repairs are required and notifying the customer and/or the appropriate East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) unit.
*Using a computerized routing system on a regular basis.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience dealing professionally, calmly and effectively with various people in stressful or difficult situations; excellent communication skills including the ability to interpret and explain complex procedures and policies; the ability to rapidly learn EBMUD water service policies and regulations, including water rate structures; experience working with computers; skill in reading water meters quickly and accurately; and the ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision.
The salary range is $7,748 per month increasing to $8,135, $8,542, $8,969 and $9,417 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

1.Completion of the twelfth grade or its equivalent.
2.Two years of office or field experience in which a major responsibility was the interpretation and enforcement of complex regulations and policies in order to resolve customer complaints; OR
3.Two years of meter reading experience.
4.Possession of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
Uniforms are required for this position and will be provided. Candidates must be physically capable of performing the critical and important duties of the job, including having sufficient agility to climb stairs and ladders; to crawl under, over and around obstacles such as shrubbery; to turn meters on and off; and sufficient strength to maneuver meter covers weighing up to 100 pounds with the proper equipment. Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions, including inclement weather. Must be willing to travel from site to site, working closely with the public. Must be willing to work overtime and weekends as needed. Must be willing to work night shift hours when necessary.

2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part to advance to the next step in the selection process.
3.Application materials will be reviewed and those applicants meeting the minimum requirements will be invited to an in-person written test, scheduled for Friday, May 30th or Saturday May 31st, 2025. Note that the study guide and Puddle Stoppers Handbook required for the test will only be available online until 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 29th, 2025; candidates are responsible for accessing the study guide and Puddle Stoppers Handbook before this deadline.
4.Candidates must pass all portions of the written test to continue in the selection process. The written test will be weighted 40% of the overall score. Those passing the written test will be invited to a panel interview (weighted 60% of overall score). This step is scheduled to take place in late-June.
5.Successful candidates in both the written test and the panel interview will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancies, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
6.The probation period for this position is 6 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
