Autonomous Control Software Systems Engineer

Location: NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC)- Houston TX

Drive the Future of Deep Space Autonomy

Are you inspired by the idea of sending humans to the Moon, Mars, and beyond? Do you thrive at the intersection of autonomous systems, complex engineering, and cutting-edge software? Are you ready to solve the kinds of challenges only space can offer?

If so - we want YOU on our team.

Astrion is seeking a skilled and visionary Autonomous Control Software Systems Engineer to join our team and help shape the future of spaceflight.

This is a potential opening. Final approval is pending, but interviews are underway so we're ready to launch when the opportunity opens officially.

What You'll Do

In this role, you'll help develop resilient, intelligent systems that allow spacecraft and robotic systems to operate autonomously - navigating unknown environments, adapting to faults, and maintaining mission success without real-time human intervention.

You'll:

  • Analyze and model highly complex systems, including failure modes, interfaces, and system behavior

  • Apply model-based systems engineering (MBSE) to develop and refine system architectures

  • Conduct failure analyses using FMEAs, FMECAs, and fault tree tools

  • Contribute to the development of autonomous control logic and health management systems

  • Collaborate across engineering teams to ensure fault-tolerant designs

  • Support systems through development, integration, testing, and deployment

What You Bring Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Master's preferred)

  • 5-10 years of experience in a relevant engineering field

  • Background in modeling and analysis of cyber-physical systems

  • Hands-on experience in:

    • Risk and fault analysis (FMEAs, FMECAs, fault trees)

    • System health management, fault detection, and mitigation

    • Redundancy and fault-tolerant design

    • Dynamic system behavior modeling

  • Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems integration

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Experience with avionics or embedded software systems

  • Familiarity with NASA systems and development standards

  • Proficiency in C/C++, Linux environments, and scripting with Python

  • Exposure to software architecture for autonomous or robotic systems

Why Join Astrion?

This is more than a job. It's a mission. At Astrion you'll have the chance to work on programs that push human potential farther than it's ever gone. You'll be surrounded by brilliant minds, cutting-edge tech, and the opportunity to do work that matters.

Here's what you can expect:

  • Meaningful projects that directly support NASA's human spaceflight programs

  • Career growth and personal development in a world-class engineering environment

  • 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off!)

  • Onsite cafeteria with breakfast and lunch options

  • A culture of innovation, collaboration, and purpose

Additional Information
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency may be required

  • Must be able to pass a government background investigation

  • Primarily office-based with occasional physical tasks

  • Professional behavior and safety awareness required in all work environments
