THE POSITION

Are you a highly motivated professional ready to start a new and exciting chapter in your career? The Department of General Services, Strategic Support & Audit Division is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Metrologist. In this role, you will perform calibrations on precision standards of mass, volume, length, time and force submitted by private industry, state agencies and law enforcement agencies. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this essential role, you will participate in the maintenance and implementation of the laboratory's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Office of Weights and Measures (OWM) laboratory recognition and NIST, National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) accreditation. Work involves calibrating field standards for State, County and Municipal officials and working standards for industry. This includes calibrating Class IIII Scales (wheel load or axle load weighers) used by the Pennsylvania State Police, municipal police departments, PennDOT districts and commercial entities to enforce and comply vehicle weight laws and permits. You will have the opportunity to participate in the Northeast Measurement Assurance Program (NEMAP), a regional organization of NIST, Office of Weights and Measures (NIST, OWM), to aid in the continuing evaluation of the laboratory's measurements assurance.

Other duties to include but not limited to:

  • Participating in internal and external management system audits, compiling findings and implementing appropriate actions
  • Calibrating, or preparing for, the calibration of laboratory reference and working standards
  • Preparing calibration certificates in compliance to the ISO/IEC 17025 Standard
  • Use of a variety of equipment (straps, chains, lifting fixtures, forklift, and fork extenders) to safely handle customer artifacts for calibration from receipt to final shipment

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, physics or mathematics and one year of professional experience in a metrology laboratory; or
  • An associates degree in metrology and three years of professional experience in a metrology laboratory. Weights and measures enforcement experience may be substituted for education at the rate of one year of experience for one year of education.

Additional Requirement:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Successful completion of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) training seminars, including laboratory auditing problems (LAP's).

    • Volume Metrology
