A Brief Overview

The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine is seeking an Associate Chair of Education. The Associate Chair of Education serves in a critical Departmental role as the accountable leader for all educational programming in the Department. The Associate Chair collaborates with the Department Chair and Vice Chair, the Administrative Director for Education, the Division Chiefs, the PSOM Education Officer, and the Program Leaders for all educational programs within the Department and across CHOP and PSOM to develop, maintain, and further enhance top notch offerings for faculty, fellow, resident, medical student, and APP education in anesthesiology and critical care. The Associate Chair serves as the ultimate Leader for all education programming in the Department, the Representative of Departmental Education outside of the Department, and the Manager of the Department's Education-oriented infrastructure.

Specific Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Lead the Department Education Council, including regular meetings and annual retreat
  • Lead the Department's Grand Rounds series
  • Advise the Chair and other Departmental Leaders on strategies to improve all education programs, including fellowships, resident rotations, medical student rotations, faculty professional development, allied health education, and others
  • Develop and manage the Department's education budget to optimize educational impact, accountability, and finances, in collaboration with the Administrative Director for Education
  • Collaborate with Associate Division Chiefs for Education to improve the quality and quantity of feedback to faculty from trainees
  • Collaborate with Associate Division Chiefs for Education to improve the quality and quantity of feedback to trainees from faculty
  • Refresh policies relating to education annually (and determine gaps requiring new education policies), in collaboration with the Administrative Director for Education
  • Aid in recruitment, and serve as ad-hoc mentor, for faculty educators
  • Serve on the Departmental Cabinet
  • Represent CHOP Anesthesiology and Critical Care within CHOP, within PSOM, and nationally/internationally as requested by the Chair
  • Ad hoc participation in fellowship Program Evaluation Committee
  • Collaborate with the Departmental PSOM Education Officer(s) to develop systems for faculty and staff in the education programs to promote productive, rewarding careers
  • Serve as a model educator in the Department

Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports to Department Chair
  • Mentors other Education Leaders
  • Belongs to the Department leadership team (Chair's Cabinet)
  • Interfaces closely with Division Chiefs, other Associate Chairs, CHOP Education leaders, Penn Anesthesiology and Critical Care, and PSOM Education Leaders

Additional Qualifications Required:

  • MD, DO, or equivalent degree
  • Associate Professor or higher rank on AC or CE track
  • Pediatric training
  • Board certification in Anesthesiology or Critical Care Medicine
  • At least 60% clinical time
  • Evidence of teaching excellence via TED or other evaluations
  • Lack of founded professionalism concerns
  • Lack of Focused Professional Practice Evaluation
  • Evidence of critical and strategic thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Faculty from diverse backgrounds and who will freely offer diverse viewpoints are encouraged to apply
  • MSEd or equivalent master's degree
  • Experience leading a formal educational program at CHOP or elsewhere
  • Positive and collaborative attitude
  • Willingness to speak against consensus in the interest of improving final decisions

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of experience in an Education Leadership/Administration Role
