Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

This new project aims to measurably reduce Americans' exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The project will focus on reducing exposure to the most harmful EDCs in use in the near-term, while laying the foundation for longer-term policy reform to prevent additional harmful EDCs from being introduced. The Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals project is a collaboration between Pew's Environment and Government Performance portfolios.

The Environment Portfolio focuses on science-based, nonpartisan, and sustainable solutions to help protect the planet and people. We work in partnership with governments, Indigenous rights holders, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, local stakeholders, scientists, and other researchers to advance public policy so that nature and communities can thrive.

The Government Performance portfolio provides the nonpartisan research, solutions, and momentum decisionmakers need to ensure our institutions improve the health of people in the United States and enable them to successfully climb the economic ladder. Those goals are pursued through a wide range of the portfolio's policy-focused projects (with explorations into new areas underway)-from ensuring states' finances are prepared for future volatility, to unlocking gateways to mental health care, to addressing the nation's lack of attainable housing.

Position Overview

The Project Director, Public Policy, Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, serves a key role in conceptualizing, designing, and implementing plans to establish and support the successful implementation of permanent and durable policies on a state and federal level aimed at reducing Americans' exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals and improving chemical regulation oversight. This role requires expertise in designing and overseeing public policy campaigns, preferably related to health policy, and a proven capacity to achieve impactful results. Effective leadership and communication skills are required, along with expertise in navigating the interests of multiple stakeholders through a nonpartisan lens.

The Project Director will work closely with state and federal government officials, nongovernmental organizations, and other stakeholders to mobilize support for strong and durable measures that advance programmatic goals. To achieve key tasks, the project director must develop close working relationships and become a trusted advisor to staff across each of the project's workstreams.

The Project Director reports to the Director and is based in Pew's DC office. The position will participate in Pew's core in-office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will have the flexibility to work from home the remainder of each week. This position is contingent upon board approval in June 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a work environment that is diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible and in line with Pew and the project's related goals.
  • Manage and mentor a team of approximately 12 professionals, including day-to-day leadership and ongoing professional development.
  • Manage contracted policy and research partners to ensure that workflow is going smoothly, is meeting deliverables and is within budget.
  • Oversee and lead all state and federal policy work for the project, ensuring that efforts are coordinated and in line with project and institutional goals.
  • Design and oversee the implementation of strategies to secure and successfully implement policies aimed at reducing exposure to harmful EDCs in at least 13 states with a diversity of political, economic, and geographic profiles.
  • Design and oversee the implementation of strategies to sustain or expand federal efforts to assess and address exposure to EDCs.
  • Work with the Director and leadership in adjacent workstreams (i.e. Science, Private Sector, and Cross-Cutting teams) to set achievable and measurable goals to improve and enhance Pew's work and impact and with internal partners, including Pew's government relations and communications departments, to design and oversee a coordinated public engagement strategy inclusive of engagement with external coalitions.
  • Cultivate and maintain detailed knowledge of public policy discussions, regulatory changes, and other relevant changes to policies and practices related to key issues.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with bi-partisan decision-makers, government officials, policymakers, relevant non-governmental organizations, and other relevant stakeholders and institutions in the field to maximize the impact of campaign strategies.
  • Design and oversee cost effective budgets and monitor campaign expenses and capacity needs, evaluating project costs as needed.
  • Represent Pew publicly with policymakers and other key stakeholders, at conferences, seminars, and official forums, including Hill briefings, partner meetings, and with the media.
  • Participate in activities that support program and Pew-wide objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Generally, ten years of applicable experience, including staff, project, and/or consultant management experience in the for-profit or non-profit sector.
  • Clear understanding of public policy space at the state and federal level, including legislative and regulatory procedures.
  • Proven track record securing public policy outcomes and achieving measurable results, with experience related to endocrine disrupting chemicals, health policy, or chemical regulation strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing a team effectively and building collaborative relationships.
  • Expertise working productively with a wide array of stakeholders, both internal and external, leading coalitions, and approaching issues with a nonpartisan, politically astute, and objective mindset in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Adept at navigating complex and highly matrixed organizational and partnership dynamics, including building consensus and utilizing business and personal judgement to increase engagement, socialize work, and communicate effectively.
  • Possesses effective analytical skills, a strategic mindset, and experience executing plans effectively.
  • Seasoned judgement and comfort in making decisions, justifying recommendations, and being responsive, clear, and firm with colleagues and partners.
  • Effective and results-oriented planner for both short- and long-term programmatic goals and orienting these goals to align with the project team and institution's procedures.
  • Excellent oral, writing, and editing skills. Skilled at informing and influencing internal and external audiences through written and oral communications.

Travel

This position requires frequent domestic travel to meetings and conferences.

Work Authorization

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the country for which they are seeking employment without visa sponsorship.

Salary Range

$159,200 USD - $177,900 USD

The salary range represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on Pew's commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay. The actual salary offered will take into consideration many factors including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills and experience, internal pay equity, and business need.
