Graduate Medical Education is a joint effort of
ECU Health Medical Center and the Brody School of Medicine (
BSOM).
ECU Health Medical Center, the sponsoring institution for accreditation of the institution and physician training programs by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (
ACGME), is a greater than 1000-bed safety net academic medical center and the flagship hospital for
ECU Health, a system of hospitals and clinics whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of the people of eastern North Carolina. The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is a 40-year-old medical school with a strong primary care orientation. The school was established in 1974 by the North Carolina legislature. BSOM's mission is to increase the supply of primary care physicians serving the state, to improve the health and well-being of the region, and to train physicians who will meet the health care needs of the state.
The Office of Graduate Medical Education (
GME) provides oversight and direction for all graduate medical and dental education activities that take place at the
ECU Health Medical Center and ECU's Brody School of Medicine and affiliated clinics and practices. There are over 40 physician and dental residency training programs and fellowships and over 400 trainees that fall under the auspices of the Office of
GME. |
Job Duties |
This is an "Internal Posting" open only to applicants who are currently Perm
BSOM faculty by East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine. The position will be a part-time (up to .40
FTE/up to 40%) reassignment of time for a Brody School of Medicine faculty member.
The Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education (
GME) is an integral member of the
GME Leadership Team who is responsible primarily leading efforts to optimize the clinical learning environment for resident physicians and faculty. In addition, they lead accreditation special reviews, serve as a proxy for the Associate Dean for
GME, and participate in Office of
GME education, evaluation and faculty development efforts.
Other duties include:
- Serve as a key member of the GME Leadership Team to advance the mission and strategic goals of the Office of GME.
- Collaborate with program directors, faculty, and institutional leaders to ensure high-quality educational experiences and continuous quality improvement in training programs.
- Support compliance with accreditation requirements across all GME programs, including:
-Organizing and conducting Special Reviews
-Preparing detailed written reports and analyses following reviews
-Coordinating follow-up, including the development and monitoring of program action plans
- Participate in the design and delivery of faculty and leadership development related to GME, including:
-
GME Professional Development Series
-Program Director Bootcamp
-Program Council meetings
-Annual
GME Summit
- Serve as a mentor and advisor to program leadership and trainees on matters related to the clinical learning environment and program effectiveness.
- Represent GME at internal and external meetings as appropriate, advocating for educational excellence and trainee well-being.

Minimum Education/Experience |
- Brody School of Medicine faculty member.
- MD, DO or PhD in medical education from an appropriately accredited institution or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.
- For MD/DO: Medical licensure in the state of North Carolina; board certified in appropriate discipline.
- Experience in medical education.
