Position Summary

This position within the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) will be physically located at Eglin AFB, to support the Advanced Deterrence group within the Enabling Mission Capability at Scale technical directorate. This group has expertise in the areas of software architecture, development, and engineering, including the ability to evaluate source code and hardware description language using both static, dynamic, and embedded tool analysis for the Department of Defense (DoD) and other government agency customers. This position will support the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) mission by working with these government programs to understand their challenges, identifying actionable solutions, and guiding programs to operationalize the most effective techniques and practices.

Key activities include:

  • Provide embedded software engineering support at our customer location in Eglin AFB, FL.
  • Required to work with government program offices to identify strengths and weaknesses within the acquisition program and their contractor base and build solutions to address the weaknesses and recognize and support the strengths
  • Understand customer software engineering challenges in continuous software development, integration or deployment technologies and identifying tailored or integrated solutions
  • Analyze use of cyber security approaches, methodologies, tools, and techniques to prevent risks and issues, and mitigate those that emerge.
  • Analyze FPGA hardware and software interface specifications described via VHDL or Verilog to ensure it meets system requirements.
  • Analyze software test and evaluation techniques and methodologies.
  • Analyze static, dynamic and complexity software tool outputs to identify areas of software weakness where additional design / refactoring may be required.
  • Analyze software contractor's task development, activities, deliverables, risks, issues, and recommend mitigation strategies and techniques as appropriate.
  • Creating, applying and codifying new approaches to address challenges and advance software engineering.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • BS with 8 years' experience, MS with 5 years' experience or PhD with 2 years' experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field, with professional experience as a software developer or engineer, verification engineer in a collaborative team environment.
  • Willingness to travel to various locations to support the SEI's overall mission. This includes within the SEI and CMU community, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion. Moderate (25%) travel outside of your home location.
  • At least 75% of your weekly effort will be onsite at either SEI or customer facility.
  • You will be subject to a background investigation and must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.
  • Deep, detailed knowledge of software engineering fundamentals, including requirements development and management, software architecture and design techniques, software configuration management, software testing and verification, software assurance coding, and software metrics.
  • Proficiency in software development languages e.g., C, C++, Ada and/or firmware development languages e.g., VHDL, Verilog.
  • Experience with developing or analyzing embedded software built using modern Real Time Operating Systems like VxWorks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and ability to present to principal partners internal and external to the organization.
  • Demonstrated team related skills with the ability to lead and participate in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge in machine learning and artificial intelligence methods and applications is a plus.
