Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned) We are seeking an experienced Director Engineering - Mechanical Services to lead and oversee compliance and reliability programs to support our operating organization. This leadership role is critical in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of mechanical systems across our power generation facilities. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in the power industry, strong leadership capabilities, and a track record of operational excellence. Provides leadership, project management, technical support, budgeting, and operational troubleshooting for Calpine's operating fleet. Organizes, evaluates, and implements enhancement projects and reliability/compliance centered programs for Power Operations. Supports other groups within Calpine by assessing, scoping and implementing new or retrofit projects. Partners with multi-departmental leadership and other stakeholders to locate opportunities and develop and prioritize projects according to relevant measurement criteria. Responsible for ensuring that all project development technical aspects are sufficient in supporting approval and are adequate to support execution within the defined scope, quality, time and cost requirements. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of power plant design, construction, and operation. Must have a working knowledge of industry design standards, state and local building codes, and industry best practices. Job Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and develop the Engineering's Mechanical Services department, including engineers, technical advisors, program managers, and contractors.
- Responsible for following and understanding technical trends and emerging technology. Reports to senior leadership on performance, risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Manages activities of engineering project support, including cost and budgetary accountability. Drive cost-saving initiatives and manage departmental budgets effectively.
- Decisions typically related to implementation of department strategy, intradepartmental coordination, and business outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards (e.g., ASME, OSHA, ISO) and environmental regulations.
- Establishes operational objectives for multiple functions including work plans and delegating assignments to subordinate managers and senior professionals.
- Works within broad guidelines apply advanced technical knowledge of multiple functions to solve complex problems which may have a long-term impact on the Company.
- Provides Calpine's Powe Operations technical support on Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), boilers and balance of plant equipment including piping systems, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers and cooling towers.
- Analyze mechanical failures, root causes, and recommend cost-effective solutions to improve system reliability. Assume a lead role in implementing changes to improve safety, reliability and performance of the equipment.
- Provide senior level technical and field supervision of mechanical and technical contractors during planned and forced plant outages.
- Manages scoping, estimating budgeting, contract development and project execution for Major Maintenance projects that are within the Division of Responsibility of Engineering (Catalyst, HRSG Pressure Part Replacement, Distribution Grids and Covered Piping Systems). Review and approve engineering designs, equipment specifications, and vendor contracts
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Engineer and other senior management.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- At least fifteen (15) years' combined experience in the Power industry or in heavy industrial manufacturing with roles including: engineering, project engineering/management, maintenance and/or operations.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering and/or project management roles, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity within the power or energy sector preferred.
- Proven track record of leading large teams and managing multimillion-dollar maintenance and capital projects.
- Deep understanding of power plant operations, mechanical systems, Heat Recovery Steam Generators, boilers, and ancillary systems.
- Estimating, budgeting, cost tracking, scheduling, and onsite construction experience a bonus
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
- Working knowledge of the common design and fabrication codes (i.e. ASME B31.1)
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in industrial environments.
- Must be able to read and understand construction drawings. Codes/Standards, P & IDs and other technical documents.
- Must have strong computer skills especially in the use of Microsoft's Office suite.
- Candidate must be able and willing to travel.
