Position Purpose |
This position has primary responsibility for managing all science facilities related to Dartmouth's undergraduate education and research programs. The Assistant Director is the liaison for all the Science Departments to ensure that facilities-related needs are understood, prioritized and planned accordingly. This individual oversees all science facilities operations, maintains the preventative maintenance program, identifies capital renewal needs, and works in concert with the academic and research staff to manage programmatic expectations. The Sciences Facilities Assistant Director also ensures science facilities meet the compliance, sustainability, and program standards that support the academic and research mission of the College. |

- Bachelor's degree in engineering, facilities management or a related field
- Minimum six-plus years of hands-on experience in science or medical facilities management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Solid background in business management including forecasting and estimating
- Experience in key operating areas including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry
- Ability to manage all facilities areas, working with state and federal laws and regulations, and facilities compliance requirements
- Excellent supervisory and interpersonal communications skills
- Ability to relate well to diverse groups of constituents and to build strong relationships within and among those groups
- Demonstrates Initiative, sound judgment and ability to set priorities and to work independently and as part of a high-performing team
- Flexible and diplomatic management style that empowers staff, sets high expectations, and holds department colleagues accountable
- Strong service orientation and a demonstrated desire to continually improve the services and operations of an organization.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Advanced training/degree in business or planning preferred, e.g., Master's degree
- 10-plus years of experience in science or medical facilities management
- Experience in a college university or health care facility environment
- Facility Management Professional (FMP) or Certified Facility Manager (CFM) Certification

Key Accountabilities
Description |
Facilities Planning and Management
- Coordinates with academic and administrative departments to ensure the science facilities meet their programmatic needs and acts as the primary liaison between building occupants and Facilities Operations and Management (FO&M), Project Management Services, and Utilities and Engineering in Campus Services.
- Communicate consistently with the Science Facility stakeholders to ensure all parties understand priorities and timelines for operational support, projects, and all other facilities related initiatives
- Actively engages in the design and implementation of any new initiatives or major renovations needed for the academic and the research community, including the College's decarbonization project.
- Develops and maintains the planned maintenance program for all infrastructure that supports the science buildings using the integrated work management system, Planon.
- Oversees the daily service maintenance program to address all corrective needed to maintain the facilities and directive work requested by building users.
- Directs FO&M staff dedicated to the Science Facilities to execute all maintenance and operations.
- Collaborates closely with FO&M maintenance, custodial, and grounds services to provide supplemental support for building operations beyond the capacity of the site-based staff. This includes subcontractors as needed.
- Responsible for all personnel management for dedicated sciences facilities staff including labor relations, individual and group behavior, team building practices, and performance.

Description |
Service and Compliance
- Works with the Facilities Customer Service Center to track and report on all daily service, planned maintenance, and directive work orders. Provides monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting on building operations to FO&M leadership, Science Facilities, and other stakeholders.
- Works with FO&M leaders to set and maintain service standards across all areas of responsibility. Directs a quality control process designed to support accountability and the achievement of service standards.
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal, OSHA, state, and municipal regulations as they relate to facility operations under the Director's responsibility.
- Assists with the development and enforcement of building and lab safety regulations in conjunction with the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office.
- Collaborates with Animal Research Center employees to ensure appropriate security, compliance and facilities support for animals housed in science facilities.
- Supports research personnel in their efforts to be compliant with federal, state and municipal regulations that pertain to lab sciences. Coordinates regularly with the Geisel School of Medicine and Thayer School of Engineering to develop consistent standards and practices across all the institution's sciences facilities.
- Works with Campus Services Financial Officer to ensure appropriate fiscal management, procurement, and resource administration within the sciences facilities.
