Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM) has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. In partnership with the UC Health academic healthcare system and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, College of Medicine's faculty are transforming the world of medicine every day.

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM), Office of Graduate Education, enthusiastically announces this position, the Assistant Dean for Graduate Education, to address the needs of around 600 PhD and MS students. The overarching goal of this position is to work with the Associate Dean to advance the initiatives of the Office of Graduate Education, with a specific focus on graduate student success, mentoring, and training. This position/person will address these needs by establishing innovative approaches which encompass the roles and responsibilities found below. There is flexibility for this leadership position that will allow for novel approaches to achieve these primary goals. Sufficient support staff will be in place to assist in realizing these goals.

Essential Functions

  • Graduate student advising and success (20%): Provide one-on-one advising of graduate students.
  • Faculty mentor training (20%): Lead and manage training to enhance faculty skills in mentoring, focusing on continuous improvement and student success.
  • Outreach and recruiting (20%): Provide leadership for initiatives to increase visibility, facilitate enrollment, and promote access to graduate programs and research opportunities in the CoM.
  • Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Director (10%): Oversee the UC SURF application process.
  • Graduate student retention and professional development (10%): Provide leadership for initiatives to enhance retention and completion rates.
  • Participate and/or direct training programs for graduate students (10%): Assist and/or oversee execution of program, including applications, interviews, evaluation materials.
  • Graduate student mental health and wellbeing (5%): Serve as a CoM graduate education liaison to the university Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and maintain a strong relationship with CAPS.
  • Professional Development & Service (5%): Develop and maintain relationships with university colleagues and leadership.

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree or Terminal Degree.

Required Experience

  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of higher education administrative experience.
  • Some positions may require a record of scholarship and professional achievement that would meet the criteria for appointment as a full professor with tenure.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • A collaborative and transparent leadership style with the ability to build trust and credibility.
  • Extensive experience in faculty mentor training (preferably a CIMER trained instructor).
  • Extensive experience creating and delivering presentations to students and faculty on graduate education, training, and how to develop a strong application to graduate college/school.
  • Extensive experience mentoring graduate students, undergraduates, and scholars.
  • Experience matching students with research mentors.
  • Experience organizing events and programming for faculty and students.
  • Experience working with faculty, students, and trainee populations.
  • Knowledge of research training programs and graduate students training.
  • Experience in advancing and supporting the needs of students.
  • Experience in faculty and student development and training.
