Job DescriptionTexas State Technical College is tasked with contributing to the educational and economic development of the State of Texas through providing advanced technical programs. The Counselor position is crucial in providing services designed to assist students with behavioral changes needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle and optimum mental health. This position provides front line services to students. This position will seek knowledge of and pledges to actively engage in a Culture of Caring striving to respond systematically to student needs and remove barriers that may prevent students from achieving their personal and professional goals. This position reports to the assigned leader and is responsible for upholding the policies and practices consistent with the College mission and values of excellence, accountability, service and integrity.

Hiring Range: $57,542.40 - $63,296.64
The final salary offer will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications and experience. Essential Functions

Employees will demonstrate TSTC Core values of Excellence, Accountability, Service, and Integrity with internal and external stakeholders, customers, students, and members of the community.

Individual and Group Counseling

This position will provide individual and group counseling to aid students in persisting through college. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide inclusive services to all campuses assigned.
  • Provide individual counseling sessions in areas related to personal concerns, educational choices, interpersonal relationships, and social problems.
  • Provide group counseling sessions in areas related to educational choices, interpersonal relationships, and social problems.
  • Provide crisis intervention and respond to emergency situations on campus.
  • Provide support to all TSTC students, including those who attend classes outside typical working hours, such as nights and weekends.
  • This position may at times require availability to work beyond regular hours of operation and/or weekends.
  • Shall provide services as a substance abuse educator.
  • Guide students in the development of skills and strategies needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Campus Community Interaction

This position will interact with the campus community to raise awareness of mental health. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Potentially serve as an active member of the Campus Assessment Response and Evaluation (CARE) team.
  • Create, implement, and promote student workshops/seminars based on strategies and goals for individual mental health wellness designed to help students deal with critical issues and behavioral concerns.
  • Network/train faculty and staff on services and signs of mental health issues.
  • Team with administration, faculty, and staff, including across departments, in an ethical and collaborative spirit to increase persistence and retention.
  • Promote and publish events for maximum participation to the student body to increase retention, persistence, and completion.
  • Utilize data to inform event schedules and programs.
  • Evaluate and monitor program needs, identify unmet needs, and revise services as needed.
Foster Communication

This position will foster communication. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Respond in a timely manner to all student inquiries received via email, text, and phone systems.
  • Work collaboratively with a variety of departments while providing services to support student success and retention.
  • Possess a general understanding of college policies, procedures, requirements, and effectively communicate them to students.
Other Duties as Assigned

Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills Required:
  • Master's Degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology or a related field of study.
  • Actively working to obtain licensure and/or is working to complete internship hours (e.g., LPC-Associate).
  • Or has obtained full licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), or other licensed mental health professional.
  • At least two years of experience in the mental health field; experience in a higher education setting preferred.
  • Able to network with the community to provide necessary resources for the TSTC student body.
  • Knowledge of modern counseling practices and methods.
  • Ability to listen and understand the views and concerns of others and help them develop insight into themselves and their relationships.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to existing professional ethical standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of college policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, and developing original ideas to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of this position including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) with the ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to relate to individuals and groups of students using communication, counseling, and problem-solving skills.
  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions and skill in setting priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency using Microsoft Office or equivalent software, the internet, email messaging, and other information systems.
  • Advanced computer knowledge with the ability to understand and learn new online programs.
  • Able to effectively, professionally, and tactfully interact and communicate, both orally and in writing, with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Skill in independently composing letters, memos, reports, and written communication materials using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Skill in accurate record-keeping with strict attention to detail. Skill in organizing tasks, documents, and materials with efficiency and accuracy.

This job description covers a position in which the percentage of time spent on the essential functions will vary based on the workload and will ultimately be determined by the supervisor.

This position will require 5% or greater of out-of-town travel that could extend overnight(s).

This position may occasionally require 10% or more availability to work beyond regular hours of operation and/or weekends.

The salary range for this position is $57,542.40 - $63,296.64
