Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, implement, coordinate, evaluate, and promote continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.
- Assess health status by interviewing patients regarding current status and medical history.
- Collect and record nursing assessments and interventions.
- Review and report results of health status assessments, physical examinations, pertinent laboratory data, radiographic data, and psychosocial assessments to the provider.
- Assess patient/family needs and provide teaching and instructional materials.
- Provide psychosocial support to patients and families.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Prepare and administer therapies under the direction and supervision of a physician.
- Administer medications/blood products using correct medication/blood product, dosage, route, time, and technique.
- Assure pre-authorization and obtain appropriate consent forms prior to administration of therapies, where applicable.
- Facilitate dose modification by assessing patients, assessing labs, consulting protocols or treatment plans, calculating doses, and consulting physicians regarding dosage modifications, problems, and symptom management.
- Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central lines catheter devices.
- Maintain accurate documentation of assigned patient care and treatments provided.
- Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.
- Maintain work environment:
- Restock supply area as needed.
- Follow OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste, and any other material potentially infected with a bloodborne pathogen.
- Maintain all disinfection protocols.
- Maintain equipment according to quality control standards.
- Facilitate clinical operations and patient care:
- Manage patient medication refill requests from the pharmacy telephone line and record information in the patient chart.
- Assist physicians with exams and procedures.
- Maintain efficient and appropriate patient flow in and out of exam rooms.
- Facilitate and schedule consultations, pre-testing, diagnostic tests or procedures, referrals, and future appointments for patients.
- Triage patient phone calls as needed and document relevant information in the patient's chart.
- Facilitate communication between patients/families and interdisciplinary teams and coordinate services related to patient care.
- Assist patients in locating available community resources.
- Other duties as assigned.
Infusion RN:
- Key Responsibilities (Prepares and administers therapies under the direction):
- Program portable infusion pumps for continuous drug delivery and provide instruction to the patient and/or caregiver in the use of the pump at home.
- Demonstrate knowledge of ambulatory infusion pump use and maintenance, cleaning pumps after use, and proper documentation of pump usage.
Qualifications
Minimum Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):
- Education/Training:
- Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education, BSN preferred.
- RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in practicing state.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Must maintain continuing education requirements.
- Business Experience:
- 0-3 years nursing experience, preferably at least one year in oncology.
Working Conditions:
- Environment (Office, warehouse, etc.):
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations, and other conditions common to an oncology/hematology clinic environment.
- Physical Requirements (Lifting, standing, etc.):
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires standing and walking for extensive periods.
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
