Job Description

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Associate to join the Protein Sciences team in San Diego. The Protein Sciences team is responsible for guiding our drug discovery programs through key molecular insights that underlie disease target function and modulation. The successful candidate will support the advancement of our research programs to create transformative medicines for patients with serious diseases through the generation of high-quality recombinant proteins for biochemical, biophysical and / or structural biology experiments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • With minimal supervision, perform hands-on expression, purification, and characterization of mammalian integral membrane proteins for assay development and biophysical experiments.
  • Design and implement protein purification protocols to generate high quality, homogeneous protein, using various chromatography methods such as affinity, size exclusion, ion exchange.
  • Seek out and implement alternative strategies to address potential challenges in protein expression and purification to ensure consistent deliveries of high-quality protein.
  • Hands-on characterization of the stability and homogeneity of purified proteins using techniques such as FPLC, HPLC, SDS-PAGE, LC-MS.
  • Work collaboratively within the team, as well as cross-functionally to achieve program goals.
  • Excellent record keeping and compliance with Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) submissions.
  • An open mindset and eagerness to learn new techniques, as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences and 0-2 years of relevant employment experience, or
  • Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences and 4+ years of relevant employment experience
  • Hands-on experience in purifying high-quality recombinant proteins for biochemistry, biophysics or structural biology experiments.
  • Hands-on experience in heterologous protein expression in mammalian and/or insect systems.
  • Ability to multitask and attention to detail.
  • Team oriented, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, timeline-driven work environment.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written) in presenting results and objectives to the Protein Sciences team and to larger cross-functional teams.

Pay Range:

$69,600 - $104,400

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
