The RNI-A is a business incubator that accelerates innovative technology and research spun out of the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI), part of the West Virginia University Health System. The RNI-A is currently focusing on two areas of top priority: Focused Ultrasound Technology for Neuromodulation, and Digital Health Management (AI driven interventions for health and disease management).

The EIR will work under the CEO and together with the leadership team to oversee the execution of the RNI-A's strategic vision, mission, and business objectives. The EIR will be responsible for creating a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship by rapidly evaluating business opportunities, identifying risks, developing investment timelines and requirements, identifying funding sources and developing a prioritization plan for launching multiple new spin-out companies.

The EIR will also provide early executive leadership to spin out companies and may become the CEO of one or more of the spin-out companies.

The EIR will be accountable, and report, to the RNI-A CEO (Dr. Ali Rezai).

The role is a hybrid position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Master's degree in finance, business, engineering, or entrepreneurship in a directly related field.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Fifteen (15) of executive level leadership experience in a medical/digital health/med tech/wellness company, including oversight of product development, commercialization, and strategy for innovative technology.

2. Ten (10) experience operating in C-suite and senior management environments.

1. In alignment with the CEO, set a clear vision, direction, and operational plan for the RNI-A including timelines for launching spin-out companies.

2. Establish a culture of commitment to patients, innovative technologies, and the ability to rapidly develop businesses to make technologies accessible.

3. In alignment with the CEO, create and execute a business plan for the RNI-A and its spin-out companies.

  • Identify and prioritize new business concepts, perform research & analysis of markets, competitive environment, regulatory trajectory and reimbursement pathways and financial viability.

  • Develop a strategic and business execution plan to spin out numerous viable business entities based on research and discoveries at the RNI.

  • Create preliminary visions and business plan documents for individual start up companies, including pitch decks for potential investors.

  • Develop financial projections that demonstrate the potential for the business to grow rapidly and achieve the outlined goals and objectives.

4. Maintain a current understanding of the current and future competitive environment and industry developments (regulatory, reimbursement, economic) and how these impact the RNI-A and its spin-out companies.

5. Provide Internal Leadership for the Accelerator & Accelerator Spin-Out Companies.

6. Together with the CEO, ensure that the strategic vision and business goals of the RNI-A are achieved in a timely manner and within budget.

7. Attract, recruit, manage and retain team members to support business goals. Provide management, leadership, and employee oversight/development, via active mentorship and coaching.

8. Provide early-stage executive leadership to RNI-A spin-out companies and, as spin-out companies mature, provide mentorship and guidance to spin-out company leaders, demonstrating positive, action-oriented work ethic and setting clear goals for team members.

9. Assist the CEO with the preparation of meeting materials and communications to the Board of Directors and other key stakeholders.

10. Provide day-to-day leadership and oversight of daily operations, including business operations, accounting & finances, project execution and leadership for the establishment of new companies. 11. Establish back-office functions and infrastructure (e.g., financial reporting and accounting structure, ensure tax compliance, payroll services) and set up new office space.

12. Collaborate with external legal counsel to ensure timely and accurate review of contracts, agreements, compliances, and IP prosecution.

13. Identify the need for and manage consultants including establishing scope of work and managing expectations and costs.

14. Manage third-party vendor contracts for the different RNI-A projects and oversee data sharing agreements with end-users of the different RNI-A projects (e.g., ensuring compliance for data sharing, storage, and consent).

15. Lead performance monitoring including creating and monitoring reports to ensure that the Accelerator and spin out companies are achieving the goals (clinical, operational, financial) and objectives.

16. Provide External Leadership for the Accelerator and RNI-A Spin-Out Companies.

17. Under the CEO leadership, engage with outside parties and stakeholders for strategic collaboration, partnership, expansion-strategic collaboration/liaison, pipeline, investments, acquisitions, institutional and corporate alliances etc.

COLLABORATION WITH RNI, WEST VIRGINIA HEALTH SYSTEMS, AND WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The RNI-A is an accelerator within the RNI and the West Virigina Health Systems and University eco-system. The EIR will collaborate with leaders and contractors from these organizations to achieve the goals of the RNI-A:

The EIR will collaborate with the RNI leadership team across critical functions including financial services, strategy and business development, and research operations.

  • Financial services and support with budget and financial planning from RNI Financial Manager.

  • Strategy and Business Development activities from RNI AVP for Strategy and External Partnerships.

  • Research teams led by RNI's Executive Director of Research Operations for the Innovation Center research across critical areas including:

    • Focus ultrasound for neuromodulation.

    • Focus ultrasound for neuromodulation device.

    • Focus ultrasound for neuromodulation orchestration software.

    • Digital health and wellness platform for health, wellness, and addiction

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Successful record of working with start-up companies; from early days of founding, through to securing funding for and scaling a start-up company.

2. Proven ability to articulate a bold vision confidently and credibly among a broad range of business, clinical and scientific experts.

3. Demonstrated ability to envision a market need and translate the benefits of the technology to address that need. Demonstrated understanding of stakeholder needs (including patient, payer, provider).

4. Direct experience navigating the medical technology development process including regulatory requirements (US and international), reimbursement, clinical structures, go-to-market strategies, financial and marketing strategies.

5. Broad understanding of technology around AI, SaaS, cloud, platforms, and various business models such as recurring revenue models.

6. Experience and comfort making high level decisions with the ability to collect necessary information, perform necessary analysis, and make decisive decisions.

7. Experience creating budgets and using financial projects to guide decisions and overseeing compliant financial management programs.

8. Familiarity with venture financing mechanisms and valuation models including new blended capital structures involving public/private funding and other impact related financial actors.

9. Proven capability to drive multiple projects simultaneously and with laser focus on achievement of milestones and business goals.

10. Entrepreneurial and visionary mindset with bias for action in highly ambiguous environments - enjoys making sense of white space and exploring nascent opportunities with large potential and challenging norms.

11. Excellent communication and people skills, including an ability to articulate a new vision and communicate advanced technical concepts, with potential investors, physicians, payers, and strategic partners.

12. Nimble and flexible with the ability to multitask and work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities amongst many conflicting objectives.

13. Critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, analytical/problem-solving skills, and the ability to combine and balance qualitative analysis, strategy, and operations.
