The Police Department of North Carolina State University is a CALEA and IACLEA accredited law enforcement agency. The agency provides a full array of police and security services with 54 full-time sworn officers and 17 non-sworn staff members. The department is operational 24-hours/365 days a year and has mutual aid and extraterritorial jurisdiction agreements with adjacent municipalities and law enforcement agencies. The 911 Center operates 24/7/365, is staffed by 11 Emergency Communications Officers ( ECO), and fields approximately 95,000 calls annually.

What You'll Do:


  • Be the Hero Behind the Scenes: Answer and assess emergency and non-emergency calls, quickly providing essential information to the right responders, ensuring swift action when it matters most.

  • Coordinate and Lead Safety Efforts: Dispatch police, fire, and rescue teams to various University locations, ensuring the right resources arrive promptly to protect and assist our community.

  • Harness Cutting-Edge Technology: Operate and maintain the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, ensuring seamless and accurate communication across the entire campus.

  • Monitor Campus-Wide Systems: Stay alert and ready to respond to campus fire and intrusion alarms, ensuring safety protocols are executed swiftly when necessary.
    Access Vital, Real-Time Information: Use the Division of Criminal Information terminal to gather and share data that helps enhance campus security and emergency response.

  • Ensure Operational Excellence: Manage equipment, maintain important records, and ensure everything is ready for action at a moment's notice.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High School diploma and sufficient experience to demonstrate ability to work under pressure. Additional Education and Experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced). Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. May require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with a PC and be very comfortable working with a keyboard and data entry.
  • Must be able to multi-task.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in answering 911 emergency and public safety calls.
  • Good computer and typing skills.
  • Background in public safety is helpful.

Required License or Certification

  • Certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 120 days of employment.
  • Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Must complete Communications Training Officer Course and obtain the certification
