Job Summary

Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital (LPPH) seeks an experienced Director of Facilities to oversee the hospital's physical infrastructure, ensuring optimal functionality, safety, and compliance with all regulatory standards. This individual will lead the planning, design, and execution of facility modifications, new construction projects, and maintenance operations to support the hospital's critical mission in psychiatric care and research. The Director will work closely with hospital leadership, clinicians, and regulatory agencies to develop and implement strategic facility plans that align with institutional goals and regulatory requirements.

The Director will be responsible for coordinating with occupancy and facilities project planners to ensure that all building initiatives meet operational and safety needs. This includes managing general and specialized facility projects, overseeing new construction efforts, and implementing modifications that enhance hospital efficiency and patient care. The role requires continuous collaboration with external regulatory bodies such as the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) and The Joint Commission to ensure adherence to state, federal, and internal building codes and health facility requirements.

The Director will oversee daily maintenance and engineering operations, working with a team of skilled tradespeople, including carpenters, electricians, and plumbers, as well as external contractors. This position will establish and enforce building standards for furniture, flooring, painting, window treatments, and artwork to ensure compliance with clinical and safety regulations. The Director will also oversee the hospital's key control and security badge access systems, maintaining accurate records and ensuring the security of all hospital spaces. The role involves direct coordination with the University of California of San Francisco's Police Department (UCSF PD) to manage security protocols, including panic button installations, surveillance system maintenance, and annual emergency preparedness drills such as "Code Green" testing.

Additionally, the Director will be responsible for the hospital's security management, including working with security personnel, planning patrols, and access control measures. This includes ensuring that all security staff and contractors meet the necessary training and credentialing requirements.

The Director will also participate in and lead multiple committees related to hospital operations, emergency preparedness, and facilities planning.

This position requires 24/7 availability for urgent facility-related matters. If unavailable, the Director must ensure that appropriate supervision and direction are in place. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, technical expertise in healthcare facility management, and a strategic approach to operational planning. This is a critical role in maintaining a safe, functional, and efficient hospital environment that supports the essential work of Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $141,500 - $212,200 (Annual Rate).

UCSF Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital (LPPH) is a nationally recognized leader in psychiatric care, education, and research. Established in 1941 as California's first neuropsychiatric institute, LPPH is part of the UCSF Health System. The hospital is located on the seventh floor of UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion and has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval, reflecting its commitment to excellence in patient care and safety.

LPPH provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services, offering specialized treatment for individuals with severe behavioral, emotional, and cognitive disorders. The hospital's Inpatient Program consists of a 30-bed acute psychiatric unit that delivers around-the-clock care through a biopsychosocial approach. The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offer structured, multi-disciplinary treatment for patients with complex psychiatric conditions. Additionally, LPPH provides electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for individuals with severe mood and psychotic disorders that have not responded to traditional treatments.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and and minimum six years of experience, including at least five years of lead/supervisory experience / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Strong skills to facilitate and collaborate with various internal and external constituencies on short- and long -term facilities planning and management.
  • Strong analytical, research and report preparation skills to meet regulatory and budgetary reporting requirements.
  • Strong skills in leadership, motivation of staff and team-building.
  • Strong skills in management, regulatory compliance and operations planning.
  • Strong skills in verbal and written communications.
  • Experience and knowledge to inspect construction in progress (general and specialty structures)and read, sketch and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Broad knowledge in the areas of facilities management, space planning and allocation, security, fire and safety and emergency preparedness.
