METALLURGIST - R&D

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE METALLURGIST - R&D:

  • Provides a range of technical services to internal and external customers supporting the attainment of Company and division goals.
  • Technical services include execution of research and development programs and advancing new products and processes.
  • Applies statistical methods to solve problems and design experiments.
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED FOR THE METALLURGIST - R&D:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field required.
  • 2 to 4 years relevant experience required.
  • Business/Functional Expertise: Understands the key business drivers; uses this knowledge in own work. Expands fundamental knowledge in own function and broadens skills.
  • Financial Management: Aware of costs and assists in controlling costs related to own work.
  • Working knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices. Working knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment. Knowledge of statistical methods, six sigma and/or BPI practices.
  • Problem Solving: Solves a range of problems in straightforward situations; analyzes possible solutions and assesses each using standard procedures.
  • Customer Focus: Responds to non-standard requests from customers; investigates with assistance from others as needed.
  • Ability to publish 1 paper per year.
  • Ability to bring 1 new idea or external partner per year.
  • Ability to manage project or smaller portions of larger projects and appropriately prioritize work.
  • Technical writing.
  • Knowledge of physical metallurgy and metallography.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge in multiple materials characterization techniques. (ex. Electron (SEM, EDS, EPMA) and Light microscopy, Mechanical testing, High Temperature Testing, Fatigue, Image Analysis, XRD, Corrosion, Fractography, and Failure Analysis.)
  • Ability to access mill and manufacturing areas.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to apply statistical methods in decision making.
  • Ability to function as an individual contributor with moderate supervision.
  • Ability to serve as a mentor to internal resources in narrow functional areas as requested.
  • Ability to provide support and guidance to peers and managers in key projects and opportunities with minimal assistance.
  • Ability to provide support and guidance to external customers in key projects and opportunities with moderate assistance.
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to support and participate in team efforts.
  • Ability to assist internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrates growth in the application of statistics and data analysis.
