About the Job

As a member of the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Safety and Security
Program, the Safety and Security Lead is responsible for facilitating a centralized service to the
Arboretum Community. The mission of the unit is to provide exceptional customer service and a
safe environment. The program prioritizes the well-being of Arboretum guests and staff by
implementing safety protocols that take into consideration inclement weather, building and
grounds-related incidents, and crowd control. The unit operates with the utmost professionalism
and efficiency while ensuring a positive experience for all.

Under the supervision of the Facilities Project Manager, the Safety and Security Lead will
implement Arboretum Campus safety objectives while fostering a workplace environment
committed to principles and practices of respect, diversity, inclusivity, continuous improvement,
excellent customer service, and teamwork. This position will be expected to participate in
Arboretum-wide committees, contribute to all-staff meetings, and demonstrate excellence in
coordination and communication across the organization.

The Arboretum operates seven days a week. To support business needs, this position is scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday, 8 hours per day, with occasional flexibility for additional hours or alternate workdays during peak periods or when coverage is required.

Please note the Arbortuem is located in Chaska, MN, and this position is onsite.

80% Campus Safety and Security Program Deployment

The lead is critical in modeling a safety culture based on customer service and respect for both
visitors and staff. The position will primarily work in the field to monitor buildings, grounds, and
activities related to events and daily operations.

* Lead Campus Safety and Security Program deployment, including daily check-ins with
staff on duty at visitor center, grounds, and HRC.
* Conduct daily inspections of multiple buildings, grounds, and road facilities to identify
and report potential hazards or emergencies to appropriate staff and or authorities.
* Serve as a friendly, visible presence onsite, informing visitors of Arboretum etiquette,
and assists with visitor inquiries related to wayfinding and general questions.
* Respond to general calls for service, such as accessing locked buildings, assisting staff
and visitors, and providing escorts.
* Coordinate all outside contracting/scheduling of Law Enforcement Officers for special
events and day-to-day activities onsite.
* Serve as a liaison, coordinating with law enforcement or first responders during
emergencies or medical incidents; report property damage or incidents as needed.
* Advise staff on the need for emergency Garden closure due to inclement weather,
emergencies, etc.
* Assist with parking operations and deploy grounds signage as needed

20% Campus Safety and Security Program Management
* Manage Arboretum radio communication equipment, including inventory, distribution,
repair, and replacement.
* Lead support staff with procedures to facilitate and oversee end-of-day closing activities
of Gardens and Grounds
* Source and facilitate appropriate safety program training for unit and larger staff groups
as needed
* Assist in maintaining electronic surveillance, automated security systems, and
employment identification card systems
* Assist Facilities Project Manager with scheduling Safety and Security team for shift
coverage

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor's Degree plus at least 2 years of experience in public safety profession - or - a
combination of related education and experience to equal 6 years
* Red Cross First Aid certified - Must be documented on resume
* Valid MN driver's license
* Ability to pass a comprehensive background check with no criminal convictions.

Preferred Skills:
* Demonstrates the ability to effectively manage complaints and utilize mediation and
conflict resolution techniques
* Skilled at building strong relationships across all levels and effectively communicating
Arboretum safety practices
* Team coordination and leadership skills
* Experience with documentation management and using incident reporting tools
* Attention to detail, even under pressure
* Strong written and verbal communication skills

About the Department

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is a community outreach unit of the University of Minnesota's College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences. The Arboretum is located west of Minneapolis/St Paul and its 1,200 acres traverse the municipalities of Chaska, Chanhassen and Victoria. As a member of the American Public Garden Association and an accredited museum through the American Alliance of Museums, the Arboretum is a tremendous public asset. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $24.08/hour - $29.25/hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
