This position has a hybrid schedule, 40-50% of the time in the office in Amelia, OH. American Modern Insurance Group is looking for an Accounting Lead (Regulatory Filings) to join our team! In this role, you will manage American Modern's regulatory filings team and its responsibilities, which include state and local tax filings and provisions; premium tax accounting and filings; sales and use taxes; related tax planning; all other state filing requirements. You will assist with developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures documentation to ensure the Company complies with all regulatory filing requirements in an accurate and timely manner while maintaining strict adherence to the control framework. This role reports to the Assistant Vice President, Statutory Financial Reporting and will lead, develop, and oversee the work of 2 Company-employed individuals as well as a team of offshore colleagues. Responsibilities:
- Detailed reviews of state and local income tax returns
- Management of team responsible for premium tax returns and accounting, and all other state filings
- Preparation and review of research related to tax issues and tax planning alternatives
- Coordination and management of state and local tax audits of the affected returns
- Monitoring and researching related current tax developments
- Management of tax compliance issues and filings
- Education and training of the Regulatory Filings department staff
- Coordination and management of other tax matters such as Sales and Use taxes
- Management of the monthly financial close processes, ensuring all journal entries, reporting and other items are completed according to the close calendar
- Oversees the related general ledger accounts for all American Modern companies. This includes ensuring all account reconciliations are completed accurately and timely by the Accounting Regulatory Filings team, reviewing new accounts and account sub-assignments, and assessing the impact on all processes
- Coordinates all state regulatory filing tasks to ensure adequate training, appropriate process documentation, and completion of work by scheduled deadlines
- Participates in the ongoing development/establishment of related accounting policies and procedures and operational strategies including the review and implementation of process and system changes
- Proactively identifies, researches, and develops solutions for related accounting issues, documenting applicable accounting guidance in memos, and provides on-the-job training to team members on accounting issues and end-to-end accounting processes
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent work experience, required
- 5 or more years of relevant experience in insurance accounting
- Proven experience working with accounting principles and practices, control development and review and the analysis and reporting of financial data
- Working knowledge of insurance accounting systems and technology utilized within area of responsibility
- Working knowledge of managing financial operations and reporting and ensuring timely and accurate reporting that meets quality and deadline standards
- Strong analytical, decision making, and problem-solving skills; proven ability to identify solutions and drive change; project management skills a plus
