Job Summary

The University of California, San Francisco Police Department provides contemporary police services including criminal investigation, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and site security services to a daily population of over 40,000 people. Founded in 1864, UCSF includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus that is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a graduate division for pre- and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Children's Hospital; and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. UCSF is considered one of the nation's premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. UCSF is the only UC campus dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.

Under the general supervision of an Assistant Police Chief, Police Captain and/or Police Lieutenant, the Police Sergeant is responsible for the supervision of Officers and civilian staff while maintaining the chain of command within the department. The Sergeant conducts and directs law enforcement operations in the field; manages the day to day activities of sworn police officers to ensure the adherence to policies and procedures, regulations, orders and laws; and provides leadership and supervision of a unit within the department by enforcing regulations and policies for assigned personnel. A Sergeant plans work schedules and strategies, advises and trains employees, facilitates clear and positive communications between subordinates and management, inspects and evaluates the work of subordinates, prepares and delivers employee performance evaluations, directs operations in the field, and conducts, coordinates and/or commands criminal, traffic and personnel investigations. May also be assigned to develop and perform administrative duties.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on several factors, including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The hourly range for this position is $76.01-$97.08. UCSF is considered one of the nation's premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. UCSF is the only UC campus dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.

Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A non-probationary police officer or higher rank sworn police classification with three or more years of sworn police service and holds a POST Basic certificate.
  • Working knowledge of state-of-the-art police and security management methods, philosophies, law enforcement practices, and legal issues; technical knowledge of computerized systems that support the wide variety of applications used in the law enforcement and business professions.
  • Daily function may require wearing a uniform.
  • Must be available to work alternate shifts, on-call assignments and/or work overtime.
  • Ability to pass medical and psychological examinations and an extensive background investigation in compliance with California Commission on Peace.
  • Officer Standards and Training (POST) standards.
  • Valid California Driver's License.

  • Bachelors degree
