Description

Are you searching for important work in thermal engineering?

Are you excited to contribute your expertise to collaborative interdisciplinary teams developing advanced systems?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

The Aerospace and Thermal Engineering Group is a collaborative team of engineers with backgrounds including materials science, heat transfer and thermal engineering, radiation transport, aerodynamics, propulsion, computational modeling, high performance computing, and software development. Our work spans an exciting range of interdisciplinary projects with opportunities to both deep-dive and to expand your interests.

We are seeking a highly motivated thermal engineer/analyst to join our team. Our work is primarily focused on aerodynamic, thermal and aerothermal analysis of missile systems from quick-turn-around analysis to high fidelity numerical modeling, for a wide range of conditions including launch, endo- and exo-atmospheric flight, and re-entry. Group members actively influence the development of flight hardware prototypes. Additional opportunities arise to apply your thermal/aerothermal analysis skills to diverse applications from design and testing of materials for new energy sources to support for interplanetary missions. The group is highly-skilled in first principles modeling of physics-based analytical problems and uses numerous commercial and internally-developed computational tools.

We strive to foster an energetic culture of innovation. We support and encourage professional growth and career development.

As an engineer on the Aerospace and Thermal Engineering team you may:

  • Develop models to predict thermal performance under flight conditions, using both commercial and in-house computational tools.
  • Perform preliminary and final design analysis, design sensitivity/optimization studies, and define critical areas of thermal analysis.
  • Assist in specification and testing of thermal protection systems, control surfaces, windows, flight hardware and materials.
  • Derive and verify thermal load requirements.
  • Lead system test activities.
  • Document and present design and analysis results at status meetings and reviews.
  • Collaborate across the lab on diverse applications ranging from design/testing of advanced propulsion systems to quick-turn analysis supporting warfighter needs.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a BS, MS, or PhD in aerospace engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • Have 2+ years of experience working in thermal and aerothermal analysis.
  • Are skilled in heat transfer, thermodynamics, aerothermal engineering, thermal protection systems,
  • Are able to work and effectively interact with colleagues and multi-disciplinary teams both internally and externally of different experience levels and backgrounds including industry and military personnel.
  • Are willing and able to travel occasionally to attend meetings or field tests at government and contractor sites.
  • Are comfortable working in closed area facilities.
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have initiative, interest in skill development and the flexibility to accept assignments of varied scope and skill.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
