Job description:

The primary responsibility of this position is to lead and oversee the design, implementation, evaluation, and analysis of research studies involving cellular immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and mouse genetics to elucidate mechanisms that regulate immune responses to cell death, pathogens and tumors. These duties are accomplished through the oversight of (1) planning and executing complex laboratory research studies; (2) supervising laboratory research and support staff; (3) analyzing, interpreting, and reporting scientific data in local and national scientific meetings and peer-reviewed publication; (4) submission and maintenance of animal, human and safety protocols ; (5) research grant development and submission.

Responsibilities:

  • 60% Lead research projects, including data collection, data processing, data analysis, manuscript writing, and other related oral and written reports.
    • Projects include the oversight of laboratory techniques relevant to rodent models of induced cell death, pathogen, and tumor immunology. Procedures must be lead to exacting standards to ensure high degree of reliability.
    • Research studies include leading collaborative studies with internal and external research colleagues. Research activities include maintaining high level of direct communication (in-person; telephone; email) with colleagues within and outside the lab to monitor needs.
  • 20% Supervising laboratory research and support staff.

This involves and requires the primary daily responsibility for directly managing support staff in the laboratory. Essential duties include overseeing the daily and weekly cycle of mouse husbandry and genotyping procedures that are performed by a dedicated Junior Scientist position in the laboratory. Undergraduate student employees are also supervised directly or through the Junior Scientist, to perform these animal duty tasks and are thus either directly or indirectly supervised by the Senior Research Associate. Requires daily awareness of physical needs within the animal colony including decisions made in consultation with local veterinary staff regarding animal health, treatment, and breeding concerns. Requirement and ability to train all employees in all required procedures and techniques. Ability to intercede for all levels of animal care including daily/weekly genotyping and husbandry needs in the event of illness, vacation, and/or or lapse of employment of Junior Scientist and/or student employee staff. Review and approve results of recurrent weekly tests performed on animals. Ensure results are appropriately reported in the most timely manner possible. Assign additional research support tasks as needed. Provide additional training and guidance when work is below required standards. Interview and make hiring recommendations for replacement employees. Additional mission-critical role in supervising and directly and indirectly mentoring undergraduate and graduate/medical students and postdoctoral fellows. These trainees perform laboratory rotations and complete research projects for advanced degrees, honors, or other training. Provide exposure, training, experience, and supervision (in both theory and in practice) for traditional, foundational, and state-of-the-art laboratory techniques that are essential for scientists-in-training. Aid and directly facilitate students and fellows in mastery of interpretation of scientific literature, design of experiments, execution of experiments, collection of data, interpretation and analysis of data. Provide training in preparation of trainee student and fellow data for public presentation and for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

  • 15% Oversight of analysis, interpretation, and reporting of scientific data in local and national scientific meetings and peer-reviewed publication.
    • Requires detailed documentation of procedures and experimental data on a continual basis. Ability to keep up-to-date with and compile rapidly accumulating research data results from local collaborative studies and published literature. Research findings are presented in local research meetings with colleagues. Ability to plan, orchestrate, and lead research interest group meetings for local collaborative projects. Ability to prioritize and co-interpret results from overlapping collaborative and externally published complementary and/or competitive research studies.
  • 5% Provide strategical planning to substantive and significant contributions to the development of novel research grant proposals and submission.
    • This work is performed in conjunction and/or collaboration with the primary University faculty supervisor, and also independently. Requires initial project conception, design of informative pilot experiments; collection, analysis, and interpretation of preliminary data; formulation and construction of grant outlines and preliminary drafts; writing and collaborative editing of final grant versions; preparation of supportive documents for grants; submission of final versions of grants independently and/or in collaboration with faculty supervisor; revision and re-submission of grant applications as necessary following review by study sections.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Biology field with ten years of relevant experience or an advanced degree with at least eight years of relevant experience
  • Substantial publication and research experience.
  • Demonstrated record of effective collaboration, collaborative leadership, and success in building and sustaining partnerships
  • Outstanding communication skills - written and verbal
  • Demonstrated participation in grant writing
  • Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, make decisions, problem solve, and prioritize research efforts in line with research missions
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple ongoing research experimental procedures relevant to diverse existing and pilot projects.
  • Demonstrated ability of self time management skills and time management skills of their team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with rodent research
  • Experience with grant reporting and preparing and publishing scientific manuscripts
  • Experience in laboratory mentoring
  • Demonstrated expertise in immunology, including Cancer Immunology
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $103,000 - 107,000 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
