HJF is seeking a Laboratory Manager to be responsible for the day to day operations of the laboratory. Performs the most advanced laboratory procedures and supervises the work of laboratory technicians. Provides administrative oversight to space management, personnel management, and laboratory supply management.

This position will be in support of the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) at Fort Sam Houston. NAMRU-SA is a major research and development center whose mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research, to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. Its purpose is to provide non-personal support services to NAMRU-SA. Performance will include intramural research and development (R&D) support services for four (4) scientific directorates and their respective departments: Directed Energy Health Effects Directorate (DEHE), Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine Directorate (CCC&OM), Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine Directorate (CH&RM), and Research Services Directorate (RSD).

This effort primarily entails investigative studies which involve planning, coordinating, designing, and executing experimental protocols that meet both directorate-level research objectives and the command mission.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This position is contingent on contract award.


Responsibilities

  • Assist personnel with day-to-day laboratory operations pertaining to research-related sample storage and equipment maintenance.
  • Communicate and advise Department Heads and PIs of evolving situations in the laboratory spaces.
  • Coordinate information pertaining to lab management activities between departments; communicate directly with lab managers of individual directorates/departments to address needs and support day-to-day operations.
  • Pack and/or coordinate outgoing shipments of samples/materials for PIs.
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained and calibrated in accordance with established protocols and research SOPs; coordinates repairs and preventative maintenance for equipment as required.
  • Assists with periodic inventory, safety inspections, and program reviews
  • Create, manage, review, and route for approval SOPs and DOPs for protocols and/or equipment.
  • Assist with establishment and maintenance of Satellite Accumulation Points (SAP) for chemical and biological waste; ensure SAP sites and hazardous waste containers are routinely checked and coordinate for removal as required.
  • Ensure compliance of safety and industrial hygiene standards and regulations in laboratory spaces; inform PIs and Directors of discrepancies.
  • Ensure emergency eye wash stations are checked on a weekly basis; replace eye wash checklists annually and forward prior year to Safety Officer.
  • Review and update biological agents and NFPA ratings on door signs as required.
  • Support equipment, supply, and purchasing requirements for departments/directorates.
  • Assists with supply and expendable item inventory; coordinates ordering necessary supplies for experiments; ensures expired supplies are removed from laboratory spaces; assists completing purchase requests as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct Supervisor: Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases.
  • Conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree required plus 5 years of related expereience OR Master's degree plus demonstrable experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, safety procedures and standard laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in use of advanced laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Ability to supervise and train technicians and direct work assignments.
  • Ability to make presentation to groups, write manuscripts and abstracts, correctly transcribe laboratory results create and enforce standard operating procedures.
  • Must interface with investigators, vendors, research staff, and study participant.
  • Skill in use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, email, and database software
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance, including background check and drug screening.
  • All staff required to enter the labs shall maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course; American Red Cross CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation); or equivalent.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
