HJF is seeking a Research Engineer I to perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. Responsible for systems design and configuration, implementation, testing and maintenance of hardware systems involving electronics components, radiation detectors and computer interfaces for collecting and processing research data in conjunction with a specified program. This is the first of three Biomedical Engineering levels.

This position will be in support of the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) at Fort Sam Houston. NAMRU-SA is a major research and development center whose mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research, to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. Its purpose is to provide non-personal support services to NAMRU-SA. Performance will include intramural research and development (R&D) support services for four (4) scientific directorates and their respective departments: Directed Energy Health Effects Directorate (DEHE), Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine Directorate (CCC&OM), Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine Directorate (CH&RM), and Research Services Directorate (RSD).

This effort primarily entails investigative studies which involve planning, coordinating, designing, and executing experimental protocols that meet both directorate-level research objectives and the command mission.

This position is contingent on contract award.


Responsibilities

  • Provides support in professional biomedical engineering functions involving medical research practices to support the laboratory's efforts.
  • Support the Government in direction of the integration, fabrication, and functional testing of systems after installation to ensure that performance meets specifications and customer requirements.
  • Sets up, operates, and calibrates laboratory equipment in accordance with research protocols.
  • Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures.
  • Assists in the maintenance of a clean and operational lab space.
  • Assists in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies for research.
  • Compiles and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques.
  • Assists with writing and editing material for publication and presentation.
  • Reports on status of research activities.
  • Routes administrative paperwork related to scientific products.
  • Maintains data and records securely, including the use of an assigned laboratory notebook.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Associates' degree in related field plus 5 years of related experience OR Bachelor's Degree plus demonstratable experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of the underlying principles of physics, mathematics and physiology as it applies to biomedical engineering.
  • knowledge of PET techniques preferred.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance, including background check and drug screening.
  • All staff required to enter the labs shall maintain current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course; American Red Cross CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation); or equivalent.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects
