Department:ROAR First Year AdvisingDepartment's Website: An academic advisor in the ROAR First-Year Advising Center is responsible for helping students through academic and career advising, registration, degree auditing, new student onboarding programs, and retention initiatives. Advisors also serve in the Academic Advising Council and participate in case management supports for targeted populations. This position reports to the Director of First-Year Advising. Summary of Job Duties: *Serve as a student advocate. Work closely with students who are first-year, transfer, athletes, conditional admits, and international. *Assist students with major and course selection while providing career development and long-term planning assistance. *Maintain records of student engagement, degree progression, and communication. *Promote retention through innovative programming and referrals. *Review academic standing of students for interventions and referrals. Connect students with academic supports, including ASC, Writing Center, Career Services, TRIO, Disability Services, and others. *Participate in New Student Orientation, Student Success and Retention functions, Enrollment Management functions, Graduation, and other activities as needed. *Provide strong customer service, promoting the public image of the University to students and families in a friendly and accurate manner. *Assess the general needs of students and visitors, making connections with Student Life, Counseling Center, and Executive Director for Retention as needed. *Assist students with use of career research software to assist with major planning. *Develop a working knowledge of current advising practices, career exploration methods, and employment trends by participating in workshops and professional organizations. *Assist with special events and retention functions to grow the institutional climate for student success. *Maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork. *Participating actively in special projects and committees as assigned. Qualifications: Qualifications Required Education and/or Work Experience: Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree. Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: Experience in academic advising, career planning, admissions, financial aid, or new student programs preferred. Additional Information: Working Relationships: Academic Advisors work in a team environment interacting with other professional advisors, faculty, staff, and campus stakeholders to serve as liaisons and student advocates. Advisors play an important role in supporting first-year incoming students as well as students from varied populations. Special Job Dimensions: Work performed primarily in an office setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee frequently sits for extended periods of time, and occasionally stands and walks. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee regularly talks and hears. Employee occasionally lifts items up to 20 pounds. Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm with infrequent but occasional weekend hours and travel required. Background Check Requirements.
