SUMMARY
The Operating Room Nurse Certified provides patient care in a surgical setting in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice with the policies, values, and mission of the organization. Well-versed in standard surgical procedures and patient care protocols to effectively monitor and manage the patient and operative environment during surgery. Provides guidance and oversight of new graduate nurses and newly hired team members in all patient care and clinical activities and ensures that behaviors adhere to documentation standards, standards of excellence and all other policies and procedures.
The Operating Room at Anschutz campus is a 14 OR unit that treats children and adolescents for any level of injury or illness. The unit supports 24 different surgical specialties and performs more than 23,000 cases a year. We are a unique, yet impressive team comprised of bachelor's prepared nurses, certified surgical technicians, anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, and surgeons. The staff in the OR are proud to provide safe quality of care to our patients. We perform a wide variety of surgical procedures including abdominal and thoracic surgery, bariatric surgery, cleft, craniofacial, and plastic reconstructive surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiac surgery, ENT surgery, fetal surgery, burn treatment, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology surgery, gynecologic procedures, transplant surgery, and urology surgery. Our OR nurses and surgical technologists receive extensive training and education in all surgical specialties promoting communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. Duties & Responsibilities
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.
1. Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate intraoperative patient care plans.
2. Serves as the communication liaison to patients, families and members of the operating team
3. Prepares operating room for patient and procedure.
4. Delivers patient and family centered care incorporating the nursing process while providing developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence-based care. Actively anticipates changes in patient outcomes/ unit needs in the provision of care.
5. Communicate and advocate patient values, preferences and expressed needs as part of implementation of care plan, evaluation of care and assessment of patient/family learning needs to the interdisciplinary team. Initiates and anticipates individualized care and education for patients/families across the continuum using an interdisciplinary approach.
6. Utilizes outcome data at the patient level to make care decisions.
7. Provides insights into quality improvement activities and uses quality measures to understand individual and unit performance.
8. Communicates observations or concerns related to unsafe situations that pose a risk to patients, families or the health care team.
9. Recognizes and applies information and technology of patient and unit outcomes to facilitate communication, clinical decision making, error prevention, and care coordination.
10. Navigates and documents in the EMR to support patient care.
11. Works within scope of practice and delegates according to Nurse Practice Act.
12. Collaborates on the allocation of resources to meet patient needs through appropriate assignments based on patient acuity, staff competency, unit needs and patient safety.
13. Participates in providing and monitoring staff competencies. Collaborates with the CNE/CNS to meet the educational need of the unit(s) to maintain continuity of care related to specific patient-care requirements.
14. Follows policy and procedure for all clinical skills and provides a variety of teaching methodologies to ensure the orientee learns and can competently demonstrate those skills in accordance with policies and procedures.
15. Provides direct guidance and oversight for the orientee in all patient care and clinical activities and ensures that those behaviors adhere to documentation standards, standards of excellence, and all other policy and procedure.
16. May participate in coaching activities to assist in meeting orientees weekly orientation goals based on current level of clinical experience and available learning experiences.
17. Communicates to Clinical Educator any delays or problems related to achieving an orientee's goals as soon as identified to ensure immediate intervention for optimal success; notifies CE of successes of the orientee (not just of delays/problems) to ensure accountability of the leadership team to the overall progress of the orientation, strengths, and opportunities for growth.
18. Completes orientees evaluation form on completion of orientation, includes any other required regulatory documentation of orientee competency, including verification of competency to administer blood/products, competency to operate the defibrillator, and all competency statements related to job essential functions of an independently functioning clinical nurse.
19. Orients to the charge nurse role and acts as charge nurse as needed. Charge nurse responsibilities include working with the ACM/Manager to mediate problems involving providers, patient/family, and hospital personnel, providing clinical follow up through just-in-time coaching when desired outcomes are not achieved, and taking ownership in the financial success of the unit with appropriate resource utilization and management of staffing.
20. Participates in unit and shared governance initiatives to improve patient care, throughout as determined by leadership.
21. Assists Clinical Education Specialists in educational instruction, simulation experiences, and clinical competency verification.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Experience: Two (2) years perioperative nursing experience
Certification(s): BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire. CNOR within 6 months of hire.
Licensure(s): Current State licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
