The Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) is a senior physician executive who partners with and reports to the Chief Medical Officer of Optum Health, providing strategic and operational expertise in identification and prioritization of IT and digital investments across Optum Health. The CHIO will drive the clinical informatics strategy across Optum Health and provide leadership for all clinical information systems within the enterprise, fostering collaboration across teams and ensuring that clinical requirements are met in all technological implementations. The CHIO is responsible for developing a solid dyad partnership with technology leadership (VP of Information Technology) to create and foster a unified vision that drives innovation and integration across the enterprise. This role is pivotal in bridging clinical practice and technology, ensuring that innovative solutions enhance both patient and physician experiences.

Primary Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:



  • Lead and manage the regional CHIOs on strategic direction ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and fostering collaboration across our regions and businesses
  • Develop and execute a strategic vision for clinical informatics that aligns with Optum Health's broader vision and strategy
  • Champion for clinician-centered design that enables clinically differentiated outcomes for our patients
  • Provide clinical insights and direction in the development, conversion and implementation of clinical information systems and other technology tools and platforms ensuring they meet the needs of clinician workflows and meaningfully improve patient care


Operational Excellence:



  • Responsible for the management, maintenance and success of all Clinical Information Technology systems deployed across Optum Health
  • Oversee the integration and optimization of EHRs and clinical technology tools and platforms with a solid focus on Epic and Athena across the enterprise to drive impactful configurations and rules within these platforms
  • Leverage clinical and other data analytics (e.g., quality metrics, claims data, usage data) to identify opportunities for improvements and inform decisioning to enhance clinical care and processes
  • Drive large-scale change across the enterprise by simplifying and standardizing technological systems and processes
  • Champion the use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, ambient voice recognition and other tools to improve patient outcomes and physician experience


Stakeholder Engagement & Governance:



  • Ability to earn and retain a "seat at the table" with key clinical and technology stakeholders by adding value through strategic guidance and recommendations
  • Chair the Optum Health National Informatics Council and Enterprise EHR Steering Council
  • Participate in other national technology and data committees across Optum Health, acting as a clinical decision-maker to represent clinical requirements and advocate for clinician and patient experiences in prioritization of work and capital across the enterprise including Machine Learning Review Board (MLRB), Care Delivery Executive Steering Committee, etc
  • Participate in various clinical committees as deemed appropriate by the Chief Medical Officer representing the clinical informatics strategy agenda and aligning enterprise technology and data expectations with the broader clinical strategy governance (e.g., Chief Clinical Council)

Required Qualifications:

Technical/Practical Experience:



  • Current and non-restricted US medical license
  • US Board Certified with significant clinical practice experience
  • Board Certification in Clinical Informatics (preferred)
  • Minimum of 10+ years hands-on experience as a medical director or higher with a deep understanding of clinical practice, technology tools and platforms
  • Experience with large-scale IT implementations from a clinical perspective
  • Physician Builder Experience (preferred)

  • Ability to see the big picture and break it down into meaningful, actionable pieces
  • Embrace the "team-of-teams" concept toward collaboration in a matrixed organization
  • Experience and proven success in strategic, operational and technical leadership in a large, complex health system


Innovation and Technology:



  • Solid background in data analytics and the ability to leverage technology to drive clinical excellence
  • In-depth knowledge of technology tools and platforms leveraged across our enterprise
  • In-depth knowledge of EHR systems and virtual/telehealth systems and applications
  • Experience with large-scale EHR implementations, particularly Epic
  • Familiarity with compliance regulations and emerging technologies


Transformational Leadership and Communication:



  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to manage complex organizational politics and build trust and manage expectations with stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through significant changes over time. Ability to energize stakeholders and leaders about informatics
  • Ability to negotiate, influence and drive consensus across diverse teams and stakeholders


Travel: Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) required
  • MBA, MHA, MPH or equivalent (preferred)

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $196,600 to $337,100 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
