Manager of Pratice Management

Cooley is seeking a Manager of Practice Managment to join the Practice Managment team.

Position summary: The Manager of Practice Management will work in partnership with the Associate Director and Director of Practice Management and practice group leaders to provide financial and operational support to department and practice group leadership. This position is expected to employ a wide range of strategic and tactical solutions to help improve the profitability and efficiency of the practice groups, including supporting the development and driving of strategy, business plans, analysis related to hiring decisions, financial, operational and competitive analysis, and work closely with various business professional teams that provide support to the department and practice groups. The Manager will assess the assigned practice group(s) strengths, weaknesses, operational effectiveness and opportunities, and advise the group leader(s) on recommended action plans to help achieve the group's long-term goals. This role will also support the Associate Directors on projects and activities in support of the overall Business and Litigation departments. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Position responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with leadership and the relevant Associate Director of Practice Management, develop business plans for various teams and help manage implementation, monitor progress and suggest proactive measures to help achieve or exceed plan goals and targets.
  • Gather, distill and monitor financial performance, working with senior practice management team members to address issues and opportunities. Develop and implement tracking measures for leadership
  • Analyze pipeline and demand metrics to support in talent management, collaborating with senior Practice Management team members and the firm's talent function
  • Support Associate Directors in implementing department administrative and operational needs; look to drive efficiencies and process improvements to better overall operation
  • Provide data and analysis to senior practice management team members and relevant practice group leadership for PG meetings and presentations to the Board
  • Work with senior practice management team members and relevant leadership to organize internal meetings and communications including:
  • Coordinate and develop agendas and substantive presentations
  • Plan and develop relevant materials for office visits;
  • Develop messaging and presentations for group retreats and other leadership meetings; and
  • Draft appropriate high quality internal communications
  • Collaborate with key firm stakeholder's cross-functionally, including marketing and communications, business development, legal talent, human resources, knowledge management, lateral integration and professional development, on executing against practice plans
  • Help facilitate long-term planning and growth strategies for assigned practice areas and respective department
  • Support the implementation, development and use of practice management tools
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of the overall department leadership function
  • Work on strategic and ad hoc initiatives and projects for the practice group, department and Firm
  • All other duties as assigned or required

Skills and experience:

Required:

  • After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications
  • Ability to work extended and/or weekend hours, as required
  • Ability to travel, as required
  • 5+ years direct applicable experience (e.g., management, finance, analytics or advisory leadership role in a law firm, professional services/consulting firm or financial institution)
  • Eligible for Senior designation with 7+ years applicable experience in the field with 2+ years of exempt/management experience in relevant roles.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in business, finance, accounting, actuarial or mathematics-related field
  • Law firm, banking and/or professional services experience
  • Supervisory experience

The expected annual pay range for this position with a full-time schedule is $125,000 - $155,000. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate. Senior level candidates may be considered for this position and would be eligible for a higher salary range based on experience.
