Job Summary
This position reports to the Senior Custodial Supervisor. Under supervision, oversee employees within an assigned core. Assists the Custodial Services Manager with the following: Performs quarterly building audits; provides training and/or retraining of staff; oversees special project work; inventories equipment and keys; ensures equipment is properly maintained; assists in supply orders and locker inventory; reviews work orders and performs follow up inspections for completion of work needed; works with Custodial Services Manager on performance issues; writes and conducts performance appraisals; conducts safety and tailgate meetings; provides back up coverage for supervisor and well as station coverage. Ensures equipment is properly maintained and custodial inventory is maintained. May assist other supervisors. Performs other assignments as required. - Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
- High school diploma, GED and/or equivalent experience.
- Supervisory experience in the custodial profession including recruitment, training, work assignment, setting expectations, evaluating performance, and providing reward and/or corrective action as required.
- Custodial experience operating ride-on and walk behind floor equipment, carpet extractors and general cleaning equipment and completing industry standard cleaning and disinfecting procedures.
- Experience using computers and software applications such as Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel; experience with technical, safety and MSDS documentation as it relates to the use of chemicals, equipment and tools.
- Oral and interpersonal communication skills to interact with all members of the campus community and staff on a variety of subjects including (but not limited to) work requests, customer service, complaints, and performance, as well as provide written reports and instructions, and develop processes for task assignment and completion.
- Skill to independently organize work to achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous projects, distribute effort appropriate among the projects, meet deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity.
- Knowledge of established safety procedures in the use and handling of hazardous materials and toxic waste.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in managing custodial supervisory personnel including recruitment, training, work assignments, setting expectations, evaluating performance, and providing recognition or corrective action.
- Organizational skills to ensure adequate staffing and project scheduling to achieve timely progress on multiple, simultaneous projects, meet deadlines, prioritize and maintain a high level of productivity. Skills to develop, implement, and conduct technical training and safety programs.

Department Overview The Custodial Services department prepares our laboratories, classrooms and indoor spaces for the rigors of research and teaching at the highest level. Work Environment UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.
This is an exempt position. The workweek for full-time exempt employees is normally considered to be 40 hours; however, greater emphasis is placed on meeting the responsibilities assigned to the position than on working a specified number of hours. Exempt employees do not receive overtime compensation or compensatory time off or additional compensation beyond the established salary for the position. Work a non-standard work schedule that may include nights, weekends, or alternative schedules such as 80 hours in 8 or 9 shifts instead of 10. This position supports critical campus functions operating 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. To assure adequate support of these functions the employee may be required to participate in a rapid response program to facilitate timely return of staff to the campus as required to meet critical needs. This rapid response program may include requirements for the employee to inform the University how they can be reached during non-working hours, to carry University provided radios, cell phones, pagers or other telecommunications equipment which would facilitate communication between the campus and employee during non-work hours, or to accept rotating on-call responsibility which could periodically restrict the off-campus movements of the employee. Vacation usage by the employee is restricted during peak workload periods as required to meet the needs of the campus. Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License. This position may require the individual to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials are present, including to clean in close proximity lab, animal and plant waste matter, radioactive waste, blood spillage, chemical smells, clean fecal matter from floors in rooms and public areas and to clean in close proximity to human cadavers or animals corpses. Must be able to wear and maintain approved safety equipment such as gloves and eye protection. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services, given at no charge to the applicant.
