Job Summary

The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist provides therapeutic treatment through the use of recreation and leisure activities for patients. Examples include sports, outdoor recreation, social skills, relationship building, independent living, leisure and recreational skill development.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Uses appropriate critical thinking and judgement in the provision of care.
  • Prepares, implements, and evaluates recreation therapy treatment programs by using recreation activities as a modality for treatment to ensure patients develop leisure skills.
  • Conducts assessments to identify patients' leisure strengths, interests and needs.
  • Documents in a timely manner patient behavior, progress, and changes through charting to monitor patient response.
  • Frequent communication with treatment team members to discuss patient treatment and programming.
  • Recognize and report behaviors in patients that impeded therapy progress.
  • Deals appropriately with disruptive or aggressive behavior.
  • Demonstrates initiative in individual professional development.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Required:
Education - High School Diploma/GED Equivalent

Preferred:

Education - Bachelors degree in Related Field
Certification - Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist - National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification

Physical Requirements: Very Heavy work - exerting over 25 pounds of force constantly (67-100% of the time), and/or more than 50 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time), and/or more than 100 pounds of force occassionally (up to 33% of the time), and/or more than 100 pounds of force seldomly to move objects. Possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues. Requires the ability to work designated shift lengths (including 8 and 12 hours), which may include night shifts or occasional irregular hours.
