Position Summary

This is the fourth level of the financial analysis classification hierarchy. Employees at this level work independently and receive minimal guidance. Incumbents are required to have in-depth knowledge and experience and work to solve complex problems. Incumbents also act as a resource for less experience employees. The Senior Accounting Analyst will work closely with payroll accounting teammates as a unit to become a payroll accounting subject matter expert, maintaining working relationships with peers within the Human Resources, Finance Program Office, IT, Rates and Regulatory teams, as well as Strada, the company's third-party payroll processor. Responsibilities for this role will include, but not be limited to, employee labor distribution and redistribution processing, accounting, and analysis of the company's bi-weekly, semi-monthly, and off-cycle payroll cycles utilizing the Labor Distribution System (LDS) application, preparation of monthly manual journal entries, account reconciliations and related analysis. The Senior Accounting Analyst will also work closely with the Labor/Benefits Accounting manager and Lead Accounting Analyst to assume responsibility for the accounting and reporting associated with stock-based compensation awards granted under the company's Long-Term Incentive Plan.

Responsibilities
  • Process and record cost of employees' direct labor, taxes, deductions and withholdings, net pay, and employer taxes (FICA, FUTA, SUTA) for each payroll run.

  • Redistribute labor cost for semi-monthly paid employees from fixed code block to code block based on employees' MyTime timesheet data.

  • Work closely with teammates, Strada and the IT Finance team to research and resolve payroll data file and labor processing issues.

  • Ensure the company's business unit contacts reclassify payroll journal entry activity recorded to general ledger suspense accounts.

  • Maintain list of business unit contacts with payroll journal entry correction responsibility.

  • Verify accuracy of payroll funding wire amounts for each payroll cycle.

  • Work with the Human Resources team and third parties to research and analyze payroll activity used to prepare general ledger account reconciliations for fixed labor distribution and payroll tax accounts, and preparation of adjusting journal entries when necessary.

  • Prepare labor data support for responses to regulatory requests and audits.

  • Maintain LDS process documentation and SOX documentation, as needed.

  • Record monthly stock-based compensation general ledger journal entries.

  • Prepare the annual stock-based compensation budget.

  • Prepare monthly actual versus budget variance analysis for stock-based compensation.

  • Respond to stock-based compensation data requests on an as-needed basis.

Required/Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or other closely related discipline

  • three (3) years or more of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree

  • Possesses and applies comprehensive and strategic knowledge of accounting and finance principles, practices, and procedures to complete complex assignments

  • Experience with financial systems including, but not limited to, Wdesk, OneStream, PeopleSoft, CAPS Online, and advanced Microsoft Office product skills (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PowerBI)

Desired Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Business Administration or Accounting

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experienced in fundamentals of payroll and/or payroll accounting concepts.

  • Experience in the preparation of complex G/L account reconciliations.

  • Strong interest in and aptitude for leveraging technical systems and data interfaces to effectively translate labor data into accurate accounting journal entries.

  • Exposure to database concepts, system job running and SQL queries.

  • Master's degree in business administration and/or accounting.

  • Six (6) plus years of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree.

  • CPA or candidate with public accounting or audit experience.

Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

Specific Requirements
  • Years of prior equivalent work related experience in lieu of a degree is N/A unless grandfathered in and requires CFO Staff approval.
