Job Description - Pre-Apprentice Electrical/ Instrumentation and Controls (E&I) Technician - Tucson

Starting pay for this position is $36.98 per hour

Vacancies exist for the position of Pre-Apprentice Electrical and Instrumentation and Controls(E&I) Technician in the Power Production Electrical Maintenance section of theTucson Power Production area. Please see the attached job description, outline for technical skills test and additional bidding information offered. This Pre-Apprentice period will not be less than one year before they may be selected to be indentured as an Apprentice. Employees in an Apprenticeship program are not eligible to transfer out of the Apprenticeship in the final two (2) years of the program and until a minimum of two (2) years worked as a Journeyman are completed.

NORMAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
* High School Diploma or equivalent
* Possession of a valid up-to-date driver license
* An understanding of electrical theory and basic level math
* Physical ability to bend, stoop and lift for extended periods of time
* Ability to work overtime and to travel for out-of-town work
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
* Ability to work harmoniously with fellow workers
* Ability to troubleshoot with multi-stage processes
* Experience with Building for Success/Getting Into Energy or Industrial Maintenance Instrument Programs preferred
* Experience in Computer Science, Construction/Electrical Trades, Electronic Maintenance, In-service Equipment Troubleshooting preferred

OUTLINE FOR TECHNICAL SKILLS TESTS
There will be a three-part testing procedure employed for this position. The first step is a timed Edison Electric Institute (EEI) aptitude test battery followed by a physical skills test and an oral interview. Upon successful completion of the first exam, you will then move into the physical skills stage and then the interview. Each step of the process must be passed in order to progress to the next step. We are giving you a study outline to prepare for both the aptitude written test and the core competency interview. By using this outline, and centralizing your study times in the areas listed below, you should be able to maximize your test results.

ADVANCING FROM PRE-APPRENTICE INTO THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
* It is critical for applicants to understand that entering a Pre-Apprentice position is the preliminary stage for the Apprenticeship Program with TEP.
* Those selected and indentured must pass the first step test, with a score of 85% or greater, or they will be removed from the program.
* After the first step test after being indentured has been passed, only one 6-month test may be failed and retaken during the remainder of the apprenticeship program. A failure of the retest shall result in termination from the apprenticeship program.
* Advance standing can be granted based on a review of education and/or work experience. The Generation Apprenticeship Committee (GAC) will make this determination.
* Advancement will be based on skill not time in the position. Apprentices must complete 100% of the related training required in their program appendix.
* Each Apprentice is required to spend at least 90 percent of their available time for on-the-job learning during each 6-month step.
* Apprenticeship Programs have very strict guidelines and the expectation is for the applicant to understand and become familiar with the details of the position.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
This job classification is an entry level position, which is designed to train the employee to perform all the basic duties and less skilled operations in connection with Apprentice Electrical and Instrumentation and Controls. Under direction of an Electrician or Instrumentation and Controls Journey level worker the employee assists, acquires knowledge and experience, and progressively learns the craft.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, includes at least the following tasks, knowledge and skills. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a complete listing of all functions and tasks performed in the job class).

POSITION-RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES
* Assist Electrical and Instrumentation and Control journey level workers as assigned
* Perform work alone within the conformance of training and safe work practices
* Able to take directions and have a willingness to learn
* Must advance to the formal apprenticeship if recommended
* Perform duties of progressively increasing importance and complexity
* Perform assigned work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company practices and procedures

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
* Become familiar with the basic skills inherent in the Journeyman classification in which they are aligned. Able to safely perform work within their training and ability
* Possess the ability to learn the required duties and the physical coordination necessary to use tools and equipment associated with his/her work area
* Have basic understanding and comply with all TEP safety rules and regulations
* Provide a high level of customer satisfaction
* Maintain high level of awareness and responsibility for environmental considerations that impact them, their jobs and the company to the level of their knowledge, training and experience
* Perform basic math
* Understand basic electrical theory
* Effectively communicate both orally and in writing
* Possess a valid driver's license
* Work harmoniously with fellow workers and customers
