The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA has two main offices, located in Washington, D.C. and Chicago. We are currently seeking a Director, Physician Payment Policy for our Washington, D.C. office. This position is a hybrid role (three days in the office, two days working remote).

Starting base salary = $195,000- $244,000- $293,000 (commensurate with related experience). The AHA is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and location.

The Director, Physician Payment Policy is responsible for taking a leadership role in developing and advocating American Hospital Association (AHA) policy related to the following: 1) post-acute care hospital (long-term care hospital and inpatient rehabilitation facility) payment and advocacy; 2) other post-acute care provider (skilled-nursing facility and home health agency) payment and advocacy; 3) AHA's Post-acute Care Strategy Steering Committee policy development and 4) analysis and advocacy on the developing post-acute care prospective payment system. Develop, advocate and articulate policy positions that enable post-acute care providers and the clinicians who work in and with these organizations to ensure access to quality care. Guide the AHA and its post-acute members through a highly evolving environment given both the challenges and opportunities facing post-acute care, including, for example, partnering with others in the organization on value-based care and private insurance issues. Engage and collaborate with AHA members; Hill staff; Federal agency staff; and other relevant organizations.

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to the following:



  • Lead AHA health policy issues, including post-acute care payment issues. Develop and maintain relationships with post-acute care members (long-term care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, skilled-nursing facilities, and home health agencies) to collaborate on advocacy work on these issues.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with senior government officials, state and national health care association executives, and the hospital community. Influence policymakers, such as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) and others through meetings and presenting own ideas.
  • Lead analysis of legislation. regulations and other relevant data to develop and present regulatory advisories, comment letters, and member webinars. Across all issues, collaborate and coordinate with the AHA federal relations and communications team members to support advocacy, public messaging, and the development of policy maker, member and public-facing materials.
  • Collaborate and provide support to other AHA team members that include a physician payment policy aspect.
