Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Lab Technician for the Waksman Institute of Microbiology.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory and/or teaching program.
- Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
- Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects.
- Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents and performs related duties as required.
- Prepares Caenorhabditis elegans media for 2 research labs.
- Assists another full-time employee in the preparation of Drosophila melanogaster media for 4 research labs.
- Performs routine flipping of fruit fly stocks and ensures regular maintenance of Drosophila cultures.
- Handles the ordering and maintaining of supplies.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- High school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience.
- An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

- Practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques.
- Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience in working with C. elegans and Drosophila (fruit flies), including their maintenance and the preparation of Fly Food and Worm media, with a strong background in general laboratory practices and procedures.

Equipment Utilized |
- Robotic petri dish handler, miniature media autoclave and dispenser, full size autoclave and Drosophila media kettle.

Physical Demands and Work Environment |
- Work involves exposure to biological research model organisms such as Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies), C. elegans (non-parasitic nematodes), bacteria, chemicals, and pressurized/heated equipment.
- Lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 25-30 pounds.
- Stoops and bends.
- Reaches and grasps with arms and hands.
- Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids. and presence of carcinogenic substances.
- Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
