Are you interested in being part of an innovative team that supports Westinghouse's mission to provide clean energy solutions? At Westinghouse, we recognize that our employees are our most valuable asset and we seek to identify, attract and recruit the most qualified talent while recognizing and encouraging the value of diversity in the global workplace.

Based in Churchill, outside of Pittsburgh, PA, the Senior Director Research and Development is a pivotal leadership role responsible for elevating Westinghouse's status as a world-class leader in R&D. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, R&D and Innovation, the successful candidate will build a strategic vision capable of developing transformational technologies that align with the company's innovative product and service offerings. The Senior Director will execute the enterprise R&D and Technology Development strategy, nurture the next generation of experts through a robust skills management framework, and implement a comprehensive intellectual property (IP) strategy. The successful candidate will develop and implement the R&D in collaboration with team members across strategy, global markets, and business units. A key focus will be transitioning from incremental innovations to game-changing breakthroughs, with an emphasis on developing a long-term technology pipeline and effective commercialization processes. The Senior Director will lead a team of 50 people, including engineers, EHS professionals, and technicians, primarily based at the Churchill R&D site, but also encompassing global R&D teams. Management of the Churchill site, focusing on transformation and infrastructure development, is a key aspect of this role. Establishing a critical skills heat map, demand signal for skills, a global competency model, and a comprehensive succession plan for key technical leaders and experts is essential.

The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader adept at spearheading technological innovation and understanding digital transformation within complex systems. This role demands a strategic thinker with long-term, multi-horizon thinking skills, coupled with a robust background in R&D and a demonstrated ability to connect research with business objectives. A deep understanding of IP management is needed. The successful candidate should have a proven track record of leading technology-driven transformations and establishing innovative operating models. The Senior Director must be able to effectively lead multiple technology development initiatives simultaneously. Experience in nuclear power is highly desirable, or at a minimum, experience dealing with extremely complex systems development from fields such as aerospace, defense, advanced/engineered materials, energy transformation, or quantum computing. The candidate should have experience with technical, strategic, and/or commercial partnering development with third parties and in business case development, pitch decks, product/market fit, and other innovation concepts. The ability to work across organizational boundaries with assumed authority rather than organizational authority is crucial. Additionally, the ability to lead and develop a globally dispersed workforce, coupled with strong presentation skills, is necessary. A Bachelor's degree is required, with an advanced degree (PhD preferred). The candidate should have at least 15 years of experience leading cross-functional, global teams, demonstrating strong business leadership, executive communication, negotiation, and analytics skills.
