Police Sergeant - North Campus

FUNCTION: The Police Sergeant serves as a first-line supervisory position within the San Jacinto College Police Department. This role is responsible for the leadership, guidance, professional development, and performance oversight of assigned police officers and staff. The Sergeant ensures compliance with departmental policies, college procedures, and applicable laws while promoting a safe and secure campus environment. Duties include administrative functions, investigations, crime prevention initiatives, and operational command during emergencies.

Essential Job Functions:



  • Provides leadership and strategic direction to an assigned shift/team
  • Review of subordinate reports for accuracy and compliance: initiate follow-up actions
  • Patrol campus property to prevent crime and ensure community safety
  • Foster effective working relationships across SJCPD and college departments
  • Lead crime prevention activities such as escorts, training, and security assessments
  • Supervise and evaluate assigned personnel
  • Manage shift schedules, leave requests, and adjustments for absences or injuries
  • Coach and mentor staff to maximize performance
  • Facilitate and coordinate ongoing training opportunities
  • Assume command during emergencies or critical incidents
  • Promote community policing and customer service initiatives
  • Conduct internal training programs
  • Maintain personnel performance documentation
  • Provide ongoing performance feedback and improvement guidance
  • Analyze information to make critical, effective decisions
  • Conduct criminal and administrative investigations
  • Administer first aid and assist emergency responders
  • Enforce traffic laws and parking regulations
  • Provide security for special events and visiting dignitaries
  • Coordinate external and internal training opportunities
  • Maintain comprehensive training records
  • Manage equipment inventory and issue departmental assets
  • Serve as administrator for department systems (CAD, video, radio, RMS, etc.)
  • Manage property and evidence as a custodian
  • Conduct background checks and assist in hiring processes
  • Uphold and model high professional standards
  • Ensure compliance with all SJCPD and college policies
  • Promote and embody the college's mission, values, and goals

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:



  • Valid Texas driver's license
  • Current Texas Peace Officer License issued by TCOLE

    • Out-of-state candidates must complete TCOLE licensing requirements and pass the Texas Licensing Exam


  • "Valuable" or higher rating on most recent annual evaluation (if applicable)
  • No disciplinary actions or performance improvement plans in the past 12 months
  • Served as a field training officer at any Law Enforcement organization


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must meet the following criteria:



  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and critical decision-making skills in a law enforcement environment relevant to San Jacinto College


Education and Experience Requirements:

Candidates must meet one of the following combinations:



  • High school diploma or equivalent and 3 years of full-time police experience
  • Associate degree and 2 years of full-time police experience
  • Bachelor's degree and 1 year of full-time police experience


Preferred Education:



  • T.C.O.L.E New Supervisor's Course
  • FBI-LEEDA Trilogy
  • Developing Leaders for Texas Law Enforcement
  • IACLEA First-Line Supervisor Institute (FLSI)


Required Licenses/Certifications:



  • Valid Texas driver's license
  • Intermediate Peace Officer Proficiency

    • Out-of-state applicants must fulfill TCOLE licensing and Intermediate Certification requirements




Preferred Licenses/Certifications:



  • TCOLE Instructor Certification


NOTE: This position requires a physical presence on campus during normal operations. Remote work is not available.


Salary Grade: 118

Salary is based on the Board-approved salary schedule for the current fiscal year. See Salary Schedule
