The many co-curricular programs, services and facilities supported by the Union are developed and operated with a focus to serve the students whose fees fund our organization and therefore are intended to impact the intellectual and experiential climate of the University and provide opportunities for campus members to engage in debate, conversation, interaction, and learning. Managed by 44 full time staff and over 185 student employees, the Carolina Union builds a sense of community as a unifying force on campus and provides students the space and resources needed to put theory into practice.
Position Summary
The Maintenance Technician reports directly to the Maintenance Manager of the Carolina Union.
This position:
* Inspects exterior and interior lights (halls, meeting rooms, offices, and maintenance spaces) and makes repairs and change lamps as necessary.
* Coordinates and develops painting schedule with support from student staff.
* Maintains paint and painting tools supply, collaborates with the Maintenance Manager to procure supplies in advance of depleting inventory.
* Coordinates and leads wall repair, sheetrock, and floor repair for the Carolina Union facility.
* Participates in general preventative maintenance of the Carolina Union facility as established by the Assistant Director of Event Services.
* Assists the Maintenance Manager of the Carolina Union in small projects including:
o Assisting with the supervision of on-site contractors
o Furniture repair
o Minor electrical repairs
o Minor plumbing repairs
o General door repair/hardware replacement
* Assist in the hiring, training, supervision, and development of Maintenance student staff.
* Inspects and cleans walkways and loading dock.
* Communicates with the Facility Maintenance Manager when work orders need to be called into the UNC Shops if work is out of the Maintenance team's scope.
* Meets with the building Maintenance Manager daily to determine workflow and provide a brief update of issues observed in the facility.
* Tests and treats all water fountains, sinks, and urinal drains with enzyme solution as preventive maintenance to avoid clogged drains.
* Works housekeeping shifts when the department is short-staffed.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Experience in a university setting.
  • Valid NC Driver's license with good driving record.
  • Experience with managing student employees in an environment committed to student learning
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and ensure accuracy in documentation and data
  • Comply with established control systems and rules
  • Determine objectives, set priorities, and delegate work appropriately
  • Ability to write and speak effectively, using conventions proper to the situation
  • Exhibit proficiency in using modern communication technologies

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to move up to 50 lbs. with/without accommodations, and work in a constantly changing, fast-paced environment
